A few years back a paper (or website) I forget which published a "test" which applicants had to pass before they were considered for BRITISH citizenship about the history, culture, customs and legislation of the UK. I think all of the native British readers admitted that the knew the answers to very few, if any, of the questions! Plus they had to take written and oral exams in the language of the counry (ie English). On that basis, I wonder how many expats would qualify for TRNC citizenship.

Ah, waddo and Carbotec - why would he/she choose to leave out a key issue? My suspicious/cynical mind is at work again. Their is a problem with 'swallows' real understanding of what issues expats face here. I have outlined a few previously - residency is an issue, but a low one IMHO. What is the BRS Agenda for expat issues, who has set it, who has agreed it, to whom are these issues to be addressed to etc et al?

'Sadly' now there's a condescending and dismissive word. Yes I can and do choose which country to live in. I choose both the UK & the TRNC. Is that a problem? Does that somehow make my opinion less valuable then? An inferior to the permanent ones?

I left out the AGM as it's another important issue and I wasn't there, nor am I a BRS member. It appears though that being 'a swallow that doesn't understand what's going on here' my opinion is worthless anyway. If I had lived here permanently for say a month and no longer a swallow, rather than the 9 years I've been visiting on average for 3 months a year, would that give me an opinion of worth?

Hector, If you find the one word "Sadly" both condescending and dismissive, then you have my appologies. You asked - "If I had lived here permanently for say a month and no longer a swallow, rather than the 9 years I've been visiting on average for 3 months a year, would that give me an opinion of worth?" - I find to have no relevence to the aim of the thread, in that you have missed 9 nonths out of every year, so have no continuity of life in the TRNC. I have no interest in the AGM as I am not a BRS member, however, the comments about it made by BRS members only go to show the society to be led by those with a personel interest in themselves, rather than in the interests of their members - sad but off thread!

It is good to be able to pick and chose the best bits that suit you, without having to deal with the everyday realities of life in the TRNC, then return to another country where life also suits you. I have no problems with this way of life for those who want it but unless you commit totally to the place in which you live then I fail to see how you can make valid comment about full cycle life there?

The title of the thread asked one simple question - the answer is that the BRS gave themselves the right - if you consider that acceptable then fine.

If "Nick the Flying Brick" who recently contested a seat in the Newark by-elections had won, even though you had not had the opportunity to vote against him or to have sight of what he intended to do on your behalf - would you have been happy that he now represented you with his views?
