Now as far as Mosquitos are concerned, I'm sweet meat and as such, an irresistible target. I would love to have any recommendations for lotions, potions etc. I'm just not prepared to eat Marmite 24/7..........

Try putting vanilla essence on your pulse points, the little pests hate it. Hope it helps

There is a product by Avon called skin so soft, it is in a blue bottle and is a moisturiser as well as mosquito repellant.
There are Avon ladies here in the TRNC, the east side is the lady at the Arvic Garden centre shop in Catalkoy just after
Tempo.

Hi,

I tried Avon Skin-So-Soft-the mossie's loved it.

I covered myself in the stuff-and was eaten alive.

I use Sinkov-works every time.

Rosie, I have tried many many lotions, potions, sprays, wrist bands plug ins, liquid & tablet form. electronic devices. I take Vit b eat marmite, never open a window or door that is not protected by a fly screen. Keep Basil plants on the balcony. Nothing works for me.
I am invaded by mossies all through the winter months.
I'll try anything. What is Sinkov and where would I get it?
Thanks in advance.

You probably need to attack the source Bonie as it's sometimes the only way. First off find any likely habitats in your area and start from their. iE stagnant water in containers ponds old tyres and the likes.

Get the local council to come and spray inside and outside it might help.

Thanks Bert,
I believe you are spot on. I'm fairly certain I know of the source,. A stream a few yards from the app which is meant to run all year but in fact only runs for a few short weeks. It rains the water remains under the rocks on the stream bed the sun comes out & hey presto.
The stream isn't my property so there is nothing I can do about it, My only hope is to protect myself.

Deniz1 My app and the stream are on a site managed by a management company. As I am the only one living here permanently & the only one affected I think they are unlikely to be bothered by my problem.
I believe the M/Company are in dispute with the Belediyesi over an entirely different issue so the Bele are unlikely to do them any favours.

Does anyone in Alsancak know if the Belediyesi still come yearly to spray for mossies and cockroaches or has that all gone by the board and I need to request a visit?
Many thanks

journey1, it just depends on where you live in Alsancak. We have friends who live in the village proper and their bit of Alsancak is sprayed 2 or 3 times a week. There are those of us who live in the far reaches from village proper and we see them once every 3 months and then the machines has run out of gunk. Remember, it is the village centre where the people who can vote inhabit!! Back to mozzies, you could also look to see if there are any swimming pools that have been three quarters empty most of the year and where the larvae have laid their eggs. Our neighbours pool was like that a year or two back, we called the Belediye and they came and sprayed the pool 3 times in 3 days. It cost about 50tl at the time. Also check if you have an area where bamboo is growing, Bamboo means stagnant water, ergo mozzies.

Sophie - so many thanks for your help.
I have had 12 years of a home just up from Riverside and always seemed to be there when the guys from the Bele came round. However if I need to I will go down to check it all out with them at the office.
thankfully I have none of the sus areas for breeding grounds and always have the roof water tank checked out as that is one place they love!
cheers

Hi,

Having previously lived in Dalaman-mossie capitol of Turkey-I have tried everything under the sun.

You can buy Sinkov in most of the supermarkets and chemists in the TRNC-it's usually in a small (white?) spray. It's one of the cheaper ones but it works better than some of the other more expensive ones.

I've tried every lotion, potion. ointment, cream-and ate vitamins and garlic-only SINKOV works.

Good Luck!

Rosie

I remember when I was in Turkey they used to smell a really strong lemon liquid which was like eat de cologne that people used to help deter mossies. Have not seen it here.

Just thought I would give an update. I have tried Sinkov but still got bitten. I recently bought some anti mossie lotion from Stormax called Bodyguard. It was 7TL and as yet I have not been bitten while using it. Any fellow mossie bite sufferers may wish to give it a try. I guess it's horses for courses.

I take an antihistamine tablet called Avil every day in the mossie season. It does seem to do the trick although the mossies do seem to be super strong this year as I have had a few bites, but certainly not as many as I used to get.
All of the supermarkets sell the lemon cologne spray mentioned above and I also use that and skin so soft before finally running my arms through the basil plant!

I guess anything is worth a try, so hopefully you may find at least a couple of things from these top ten tips - it's the first video.

Re message 17: there is a lemon cologne (Limon Kolonyasi) made in Istanbul and sold at most of the Supermarkets here. It is usually on bottom shelf with the cotton wool, nail varnish remover etc. In Erdener its at the front of the shop, near the check outs. I bought some a few days ago from either Erdener or the C'koy Lemar (sorry cant remember which). It does help deter insects and ease the itching and is also quite cooling.

Sadly its best NOT to wear expensive colognes or perfumes here in summer as they attract mossies and other insects
