Strang Markings
A few days ago a number of men were measuring and painting strange markings on the roads around the Bahceli area. They are obviously for some reason but when the men were asked what they meant the reply was "no speak English".The markings look like the letter P with and arrow at the base of the P.There is also a red paint circle with what appears to be a pipe that has been knocked into the ground to allow for perhaps a pole of some sort.Has anybody got a clue as to what these markings are for?

They have been all over Esentepe too - we were a bit worried by it, even when they explained it was for a map. Slightly less concerned now that we have seen lots of these markings out and about. No idea what the circle with the pipe is, we have one too (ours had a complimentary fag butt) - possibly to stick a theodolite in - maybe surveyors are next.

Markings all up our area too, when asked we were told it was route for the new water piping. Not sure if they are the same markings to be honest but red circles and numbers were spray painted all up the road.

I'm doubtful that the new pipe network will be as extensive as the markings - if it was - we'd all be getting a new pipe direct to our doors! Somehow I think it may be linked (e.g. accurate mapping will be required of the best and most efficient route for the new pipes is to be found) but not the route for the new pipe itself - The new pipes will surely feed into the existing network for distribution out to our homes.... Where we live is not a natural path for the new network to enter the system... it would need to traverse three ravines to get to the head.... mind you this is Cyprus.allytt wrote:Markings all up our area too, when asked we were told it was route for the new water piping. As I said not sure if they are the same markings - those going up our road we were told are for water and actually go to the area where the village pumps are. I do remember a few years ago they did mark out the area for mapping with red spray paint and the occasional stake in the ground. Perhaps you could compare the points on the ground to your local land map?Groucho wrote:I'm doubtful that the new pipe network will be as extensive as the markings - if it was - we'd all be getting a new pipe direct to our doors! Re: Strang Markings
We have the same going right up our road from the main Lapta/Girne road and they continue into "unknown territory" We were told that as the main water pipes would run along the main road, the markings were to indicate, height above main road level (we are on a road going upwards to the lower slopes of the mountains) There is also another marking on corner of any road branching off our road. The red markings are on bits of rock, pavements, sprayed on electricity poles whatever, and occasionally a bit of wrought iron with a tatty piece of red and white plastic tied to it. This is supposedly to indicate the amount of pressure needed to go uphill. Above our houses is the local water tank so we're assuming the mains water will be piped up wards and then run back to our individual properties. Then of course is could be the local graffiti artist having a field day!!

Re: Strang Markings
Hi. I have been informed that these markings are put there by people sent from Turkey to put some order into a very chaotic house registration system here in Northern Cyprus.
Hope this info is correct but we will see.

Hi,
I have been told that they are for a GPS system. This makes it easier to measure things for maps, pipes and parcellisation.
In fact anything that requires taking measurements.
