Hi all, I am sorry for lack of info but Suzan is not replying to my requests for news. It is all rather frustrating as she requested help & so many responded, all I know is that Suzan did go in on Saturday morning as I heard from somebody who had travelled a few km's in the afternoon & the compound had been cleaned & the dogs were fed.
I'm afraid that is all I have for now but will keep at it, for the dogs.

The report I had from a friend from Famagusta was that there were still no water bowls, food bowls and even though there were signs of attempted cleaning , the conditions were still dire.
The animals in her opinion needed to be seen by a Vet asap. She was going to be in contact with the Government Vets again.
The report in the paper and the comment from the Tatlisu Municipality Finance secretary Ramadan Yalcin saying that they had not had any complaints about the shelter other than dogs escaping, in my opinion sums up this dreadful situation.
What we believe to be horrific and cruel neglect is our standards and obviously not theirs - we need some Local Clout to help here from someone who the Belediyesi respect and who they will listen to!
I have not had any replies either from the emails I sent to other Mayor's or Belediyesi Offices.
Hopefully maybe people nearer, Suzan for one will give us an update.

Butting in again, but I am getting really confused here - partly because I think there are three threads on the subject . Did I read there was something on Facebook in Turkish about this pound? If Cypriots are showing concern they willl have more "clout" as someone said above. Could someone get it translated and reply. Even put a message on in English since there is usually a Cypriot around who understands it. With the greatest respect try not to sound like "interfering Brits" but just say you share their concern and is there any way you can help - including cleaning and feeding?

A small update.......from another supporter

I just heard from Suzan I will be going up to the pound again on Sunday to see if any improvement
apparently a person has been told to go morning and night to feed and clean the dogs but we are not sure of the weekends so will send another mail to the head of vets and go Sunday and will, give feed back.......

RR I have enquired on fb if any body knows of this site in Turkish & not heard any more at the moment.

As for interfering Brits, I have heard from a dog lover if it hadn't been for interfering Brits TRNC would not be where it is . I know still not good but it is all about educating the youngsters, there are a large number of locals in their 20's that do a lot for the dogs.

"Interfering Brits" is unfortunately the impression of a lot of Cypriots - not just about animals. Right or wrong (probably a bit of both) or just misunderstanding - it is more likely to achieve result to try to give the impression of concerned helpfulness, rather than criticism and trying to impose different customs. Not always easy, I know, particularly when one is really upset - but do as I say, not as I do!

Educating children in school with the cooperation of their teachers is an entirely different matter.

It occurs to me that the Mayor, or whoever is in charge, may be concerned about gates being inadvertently left open leading to more complaints about the dogs escaping. After all, he has come control over his staff - he cant start giving orders to foreign volunteers.
In fact I wonder just how one does go about cleaning a compound with so many dogs in it, and a lot of even domesticated and otherwise well behaved dogs can be clever escape artists as a lot of us dog carers know to our cost!

As for Northern Cyprus not being where it is but for Brits - that rather depends on what you think about where it is!!!

Another small update from Suzan.......

Hi here is an update about the dog pound in Tatlisu i have been told that there has been people appointed to look after the dogs....they must check on them morning and evening, thhey must make sure that they are clean and have fresh water and food. i do not know about weekends but i would like to think the same,.............. it will be checked and food taken on these days

I have asked Suzan about donations promised, still waiting to hear back

Here are a few pictures from the "NEW" Tatlisu compound. What is amazing is that the people are interacting with the dogs & the dogs are loving it.

Requests have been made for.........

Tatlisu shelter is in need of help and care for the dogs and basic things to survive
They are going to need:
1. Dried dog foods
2. Bedding, towels and old clothes
3. Vet care will need to be paid
4. Tick and flea treatments
5. Neutering to be paid for

All this will help us to show the local belediye how they can care and look after their dogs with the best interest at heart
They are wanting to learn so please let us show them how easy it can be by donating any of times listed above

One step closer to seeing a huge change again my friends ........

Just read my messages about this - brilliant news and well done to everyone who has been working behind the scenes on this. It has been a very delicate situation and a heartbreaking one and to see the improvements already made and the path now open to allow us all to help, can only mean a better quality of Life for these animals.
I am waiting for confirmation of a drop off point Alsancak way and will confirm later.
It had been mentioned that the new Tempo store Esentepe way could be used for one also or at least a meeting place.

Do we know if the Mayor is definitely 'on-side' yet? If he is, I am happy to seek easy-to-use drop off points near to Tatlisu and drop off donations. However, as ever, the devil is in the detail. Who will accept them, where, when, how often etc? We cannot expect restaurant/bar owners to agree to accept items if we cannot tell them when donations will be collected.

Hi everyone

We received a response from the head of the vet department in response to an email sent by Sarah alerting them to the plight of the Tatlisu dogs.

Dear Sarah,
Barınak is inspected and the municipality is warned to improve the conditions. They might have some difficulties operating the place and apparently taking care of the animals. They will regularly be inspected by our Department. Besides, an organisation for protection of animals( I don't know maybe it's yours) is watching barınak very closely. I watched on the TV news that they visited the place and offered assistance regarding feeding and daily care of these animals.

This is a very positive response and it's also important that it's followed up in a regular basis to make sure things don't slip again.

There are about 10 dogs, but Sarah thinks one of them might have been pregnant. We would love to get a kennel for each dog if at all possible? We know some very kind people made a few and put them in, so things are better. However, it's getting colder at night and ideally each dog should be able to snuggle up somewhere warm and dry.

So, does anyone have a kennel they no longer need, does anyone have some bedding for kennels and would anyone be willing to contribute to buying some kennels if need be?

These dogs deserve so much more than what they've had!

This is heartening to read, the dogs deserve so much more ie a loving home but if they can't have that they need to be treated with respect & the basic care, being food/water & shelter.

I do hope there are some kind hearted people that will be able to help with kennels, pallets would be a start & maybe some clever people could fashion some of the basic triangular shaped ones that are shown in the pictures.

Does anyone know who was responsible for making the kennels (quite ingenious and very sensible) and providing the food? Was it the Belediye or the TC Animal Rights Club (who apparently provided the photos)? If the latter it is wonderful to know that Cypriots are now taking a part in caring for the stray problem. Has anyone contacted them to offer help and ask what they need?

They are a local "Animal" rights group

Find them on fb,(I hope you do fb, I must admit I never did till 4 yrs ago) you could send a message, there is a contact Esra Gunsoy that Sarah talks to.

They are keeping an eye on the dogs as are the government vets.

It will be wonderful to know we have different groups of people working for the good of the dogs.

Does it really matter who it was that built these make shift kennels for these poor souls. I am sorry but it is a bit late in the day for me to swallow some half baked gesture after 2-3 years of neglect under the supervision of the local Belediyesi. of these poor animals.
How many have survived in these horrific conditions? There is no humane excuse or reason to justify how these animals have been kept.
If anyone wishes to help by donating either food, bedding, TL or anything to try and improve the living conditions of these poor dogs, please be in touch and I will guarantee that whatever, will be got to them!

Hi Cally . Once again thanks for the info. No, I do not "do" facebook - I have good reasons but it would take too long and go too far ot to explain.

I guessed there was a North Cyprus animal rights organisation involved, because that is what Kibrıs Hayvan Haklarlı kulübü means. I think it is great they are involved - they will have more influence with the authorities and important the Brits foster good relations by coordinating with them.

It is also great to see that the Government Veterinary Dept. responded positively. (sorry I missed Mozgor's post earlier).

I dont suppose the dogs will care a d*** that the kennels are "makeshift" just be glad that they have shelter!

That is the point RR we all do what we can to help the abandoned animals all over N Cyprus & to have locals working with Ex pats/Brits what ever is the ultimate. I am in UK but try to coordinate where ever I can

I have been given some donations for the dogs in Tatlisu compound today and I am going to try and liaise with someone who lives nearer to arrange a meeting maybe at a halfway point.
Monday would be good for me and if I can sort this would there be anyone else wanting to donate anything?
Please just let me know by tomorrow is possible.
Thank you to a certain amazing Lady for her Gift this morning but also for her kindness to all the animals she helps here in North Cyprus.

I heard this morning that some heartless beings stole all the bags of food at the Famagusta pound (FARC), unfortunately it is off the beaten track so I don't think any witnesses. They have over 200 dogs & this morning they were on rationing.

Tomsteel, nobody is trying to hold you hostage, we are all genuinely trying to help the dogs. I have posted Suzan's number here before, 0533 8833366 she is local to Tatlisu as I believe you are if you contact her I am sure you can come to some arrangement.
BBB's other half is coming from the West & I believe she is trying to contact Suzan to arrange a meet, there is a lot goes on on fb & I try to keep everybody liaising with each other. I hope that helps

My internet has been playing up all evening and it is too late now to sort anything out.
Will try and sort something out in the morning and if you can help tomsteel in the relay of getting things through to the dogs, brilliant.
I have made up a bag of softies from the Charity Shop I work in, plus BBB is picking other stuff up in the morning that can also be used as bedding plus I have some TL. It is not a bulk amount at the moment.
My thought is do we use the money to buy kennels and send them as they are badly needed for shelter or just pass over the money?
Would appreciate advice !

I'm planning a visit to Famagusta on Wednesday and can take through donations for Tatlisu if you like?

I'm already taking a big bag of dog food and a bag of bedding, will have 2 passengers so space is a bit restricted, but happy to take anything you may like to donate if I can get it in the car.

Sarah has told me that Suzan is happy to collect any donations, so it would make a lot more sense if she was the person doing this. I'm happy to take things to Famagusta, but can't guarantee when they will get to Tatlisu. It's the same distance from Famagusta to Tatlisu as from Catalkoy to Tatlisu.

Tom, I don't know which side of Girne you live, but happy to take through anything you have if I can fit it in.

I would just like to confirm the details of the Animal Group that has been to the see the Mayor of Tatlisu and whose offer of help in improving the conditions of the pound and the day to day lives of the dogs there, was readily accepted by him.

The Group is :-

Kibris Hayvan Haklari Kulubu and the contact there is a lovely lady called Esra Gunsoy Aktul who speaks perfect English.

They need our help in helping the now known Dog Pound of Tatlisu.
If we can liaise between ourselves but with them at the head of things, we can make this happen.
For now I will be meeting up with Moyra on Wednesday to pass on the gifts I have been given for the dogs but then maybe we can organise something on a regular basis after this.

Great you live so close and are wishing to help. I'm not sure what you mean by delivery details? Assuming you mean where items are to be delivered to in Tatlisu. I think you'd be better contacting Kibris Hayvan Haklari Kubulu 0533 8603878 and speak with Ersu. They are in contact with the Tatlisu Belediyesi and should be able to help coordinate donations and deliveries.

Just a quick update on the pound..
I have been in contact with the Lady .Esra Gunsay Aktul from the local Animals Group and she in turn has been in touch with the Head of Municipal Hayri Bey who has given his permission for us to deliver when ready two large dog kennels plus bags of softies to be used as bedding. The Kennels are being made locally here in Catalkoy and are going to be of a sturdy construction and the Carpenter has even offered to deliver them to the pound.
All Hayri Bey has asked for is one days notice of delivery as the pound is kept locked and he will make sure we can gain entry. There is no problem in anyone offering help, as and when they have something to give or are prepared to do hands on work within in the pound to try and improve the living conditions for these eleven poor dogs.
Also hoping that the female can be ''done'' as Suzan has offered a place at her kennels and to look after her while the dog is getting over the operation.

Holding my breath for word that the two big kennels have been built and can be delivered.
I have two big bags of softies i.e. sunbed covers, cushions, big wooly items - all to provide warmth for the dogs in the winter months which will be delivered with the kennels.
We are in North Cyprus where the days run into each other but hopefully it will be this week! Hence the Cyprus shrug !

It was Ramazan's day off yesterday ,but h was there to greet me ,just incase somebody saw me go in without permission so all was ok . I cleaned and fed the dogs. If any body would like to come and help may be we could get some colars and leads and take the dogs out for walks , i m sure they would love it........ there is a space that could be cleaned out so it could be used for pups or females in season or just an area !!!!"

Anyone willing to go and help out so the dogs get fed every day and their enclosures cleaned out?

I would just like to share with you the Good News that the 1st of the Large Wooden Kennels is finished.
We had the phone call this morning and my friend Joan and I called in after finishing working at The Hut to have a look at it.
Absolutely over the moon with the sturdiness and construction of it and it will be big enough for at least 3/4 dogs depending on their sizes.
We have permission from the local Belediyes to deliver it on Thursday morning at 11.00am with also 2 large bags of softies for bedding and a 20kg bag of Dog Food.
Sincere thanks go to Sadik Tuccaroglu of Karakum and his carpenter Tanner for making this for the Tatlisu Dogs and giving free delivery to Tatlisu but also for gifting it to them as well! Payment was refused - true gentlemen.
Pictures will be taken on Thursday for you all to see and then more will be built.
It has been a Good Day!

It most certainly is a good day for the Tatlisu dogs, a kennel for 3/4 will be great as they will keep each other warm.

A big big thank you to Sadik Tuccaroglu of Karakum and his carpenter Tanner not only for making the kennel but for donating to these lucky dogs, so much down to Suzan.

Indeed Christmas has most certainly come early for the dogs of Tatlisu

Sorry I have only just seen the last post as have been out most of the day.
If it is not too late for you, I dropped off softies at Sadik Tuccaroglu builders yard this morning.
Coming along the coast road from Catalkoy, Supreme end, it is sign posted just before Stormax., same side of the road.
They are delivering the 1st kennel tomorrow and are hoping to leave about 9.00am and they would be more than happy to take anything to help the dogs.
Really hope this is not too late.

Morning all, just to let you know I dropped off some bedding, dog biscuit, and flea collars, saw the kennel which has been made, really a great job by Zerdik, I am back to UK in New Year so if there is anything smallish that is needed for the doggies please let me know and I`ll do my best to bring back.
