Beware walking your dog near Old Milos!

This morning, early, I took Dolly on one of her favourite walks round by Old Milos,in Alsancak. She has 4 friends there, and always plays with them for a few minutes before we continue our walk. They vary greatly in size, but are all gentle and good-natured. However, very soon, down the mountain track beside Old Milos, came a fellow with two Rottweilers. I've seen them before, always on leads, but have always avoided them. This morning they were free, and one immediately rushed towards the playing dogs. The owner ran, shouting, but the huge beast grabbed Dolly and tossed her in the air like a rag doll, then grabbed her again. I whacked it hard with my stick and as it turned, Dolly escaped and ran and ran. The Rottweiler chased her, but the owner caught him. He apologised, but had the dog bitten a couple of inches higher, Dolly would have had her neck broken! I followed the trail of blood, expecting to find her collapsed, but she was waiting to be let in, completely traumatised, poor little thing. Those large ferocious dogs should not only be leashed, but also muzzled.

Please report this attack to the Police with as much information you have. If Dolly was injured, can you take a photo. I know people say the police do nothing but sometimes they do. The trouble is from your point of view is that they will ask if your dog was off the lead and won't take as much notice as they would/should do in normal circumstances. Thank goodness you had a heavy stick with you. Did you notice a car parked nearby, or did you feel the man had walked to where this incident occured. Give Dolly a big hug from us all.

Dolly is usually on the lead, but I let her off to play with her friends, then put her back on once we're on the road again.
She has five punctures, two of which bled for ages, but we've now got antiseptic cream from the chemist, and the bleeding has stopped. I think her woolly coat (now crimson patched) may have saved worse damage
I believe the Rottweilers and their owner go up a track to the right of the ravine, looking down from Old Milos -- so presume they live up in that area, since they're often on the road and the track to Malatia. But although it's a lovely walk, it's one we shall not take again for a very long while. Thank you for your kind words --Dolly's getting lots of cuddles.

so sorry to hear this. Do you think the dogs live in Malatya. if they do, then they would be in the houses which to me are not in the village, i.e. they are fairly near the Old School/Muhtar;'s cafe and there are about 6 of them , with nothing else around.
You MUST go the police , preferably taking a Turkish Speaker with you. The rule is dogs must be on a lead, and it is one of the reasons I don't go walking as many people have their dogs in the street, and although I have not known them ever to be nasty,(the dogs, not the owners - although?????????) it is a risk I won't take.
Please report this. There was an incidence last year with a Rottweiller n Kyrenia and I believe that the police merely having a conversation with the owner was a help. At the very least this man must keep his trottwellerson a lead, and it really needs the police to tell him.
thanks for the warning. And all just as I was thinking of taking Dudu down there. Even if she was on a lea,d not much chance against a Rottweiller, and neither have I, let alone someone as diminuitive as Dog Walker.

So sorry to hear of your awful experience. A similar thing happened to us just a few short weeks ago in our case it was a German Shepherd.
Our dog was on lead when the Shepherd sank it's teeth into her rump.
If you are able dogwalker get Dolly checked out at the vets.
I thought I could deal with my dogs injuries but due to her thick coat and reluctance to be interfered with in that area I missed other wounds.
The vet had to operate to cut away the infected flesh and she was left with a huge gaping wound which needed intensive daily treatment. If I'd taken her to the vet earlier this could have been avoided. The vet has told me since that another couple of days & I could have lost her.
Thanks to the prompt action & treatment from our vet our dogs wound is healing beautifully & is now just the size of an old sixpence.
I'm nervous now when walking with her, it's taken away much of the pleasure..
I truly hope Dolly makes a good recovery.
I agree that these large dangerous dogs should be muzzled especially when the irresponsible owners have no control.
Apologies don't pay the vets bill nor lessen the suffering of the dog that has been attacked

Thank you all for your kind messages. As I put in message 3, Dolly was off her lead to socialise and play with her friends, but only for a few minutes. In this particular situation, had she been on the lead, she would not have been able to run, and also if she'd been on the lead, I would have picked her up, and we'd probably both now be in a sorry state. It was a horrific experience!
Marion, I think the dogs live in Alsancak - perhaps between what was Sunny Lane and Old Milos, but I'm not sure. I'm going to cruise and walk that area to have a look, or just possibly, someone who reads the Forum will already know of them.

I still think you should go to the police. It could very well be the case that your incident is not isolated and that the police know of these dogs and its owner. Was he a Brit BTW? For all we know, he might have had a warning already.

He spoke English when he apologised, but I don't think he is a Brit. I need a Turkish speaker to come to the Police Station -- on a previous occasion when my husband died and I had to go there, nobody spoke English of course.

As an owner of a 50kg 9 month old Rottweiler puppy, I am deeply saddened by this incident, obviously feeling very sorry for Dolly but at the same time feeling sorry for the bad reputation Rottweilers have to endure because some people have no idea how to properly socialize and look after their dogs.
Wish all the best for Dolly's fast recovery...

dog walker , I am very saddened and annoyed by your experience , I hope this doesn't scar you or dolly from your daily routine , walking my dogs has always been a joy but I do prefer private places , I have never had a problem except for one occasion which was in the uk , two idiots walking a staffy , I asked them politly and warmly if they would put him on a lead till we got past , they told me what I should do using more explicit words , the final outcome they were both knocked out cold and I put their dog on a lead , needless to say I never saw them again ,
I strongly recommend no one follows my example , at the time I was training five nights a week and my sparring partner was british karate champion .
I hope all goes well for you , if you ever want a change of scenery we live in the karpaz and you would be very welcome to bring dolly for a walk over here .

Thank you so much for the latest kind replies and offers. The experience does colour one's feelings about Rottweilers, but my next door neighbours have a 6-month old Rottie, a sweet and gentle dog, but not being trained properly --regularly shouted at, not socialised at all, and in a small, wired area all day, alone and bored. Makes me wonder how he will turn out as he matures.
Back to Dolly, I finger-fed her a little food this evening and she had a little water, but is still trembling like a poplar leaf. Hoping for an improvement tomorrow.

This is approx 3 weeks later

"but not being trained properly --regularly shouted at, not socialised at all, and in a small, wired area all day, alone and bored." we feel sorry for this dog already No chance any dog, or any one has to 'turn out' ok I think under these conditions, very bad...

The pictures are a tribute to your love and care of your beautiful Max. I noticed in the "Max and the ball" pic that he still has a full tail -- that's another thing the neighbours did, had Arti's tail docked a couple of weeks after they had him. I said it was cruel, and he was given a tail to show pleasure, to communicate with other dogs (if he ever sees one) and to keep the flies away, but it's a macho thing I guess, and I was ignored!
Thankfully, this morning, Dolly is brighter, but still shaky -the long,terrifying,speed-race was enough to exhaust her, without the savage attack - and she's no spring-chicken but a middle-aged little lady.
Maybe, if you are ever in Alsancak, we could meet up.

Reading this post has made the absolute horror of my little Cyprus terrier who was savaged by a Rottweiler
my dog was just jumping out of the car on a friends driveway, when the R dog ran in and almost killed him.
I hope Dolly is okay, but if you can please she needs to be checked by a vet When I saw how deep the bite were on his both sides -
it just missed vital parts and he was in such pain
I will never forgive or forget

So sorry to read this about Dolly. I do hope she makes a full recovery, I know how upsetting it is when your animal is injured and you feel so helpless,

Kemal is quite right in Message 12--there are some gentle, good-natured Rottweilers, but the experience I've just had with Dolly leads to fear and distrust. Too many dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds are kept in cages or small wire runs for the greater part of their lives. They don't know love or caring, unsuitable food is thrown in once a day if they're lucky --they don't run or jump or play, and when they are given a bit of freedom they have no idea how to react. It's a very sad situation that many of us see every day, and unfortunately it often impacts on our own beloved pets.
