Residency over 60 and crossing border

My husband and I have chosen not to renew our residency when it expired at the beginning of this month. We crossed the border yesterday and had no problems, was not even commented on. On the way south, the customs official did not even look at our expired stamp, but did take a second look at the computer. On the way back the customs officer looked carefully at the computer, looked at our expired residency stamp then stamped the wee sheet and gave us 90 days. The unanswered question for me is 'do I have to cross every 90 days or less?'
If anyone has any more information, or different experiences, I would be glad to hear from them.

There is no definitive answer in writing on this topic but the consensus and the experience of friends is no. Quite simply it would not be a concession to residency if you had to renew the visa every 90days.
Until there is a written directive then we are continuing with residency because who knows what and when this concession will cease. ie when the loss in revenue is worked out!!!!!
