Smelly Water Tanks??

After 7 years our tanks are getting a bit sniffy! We can also smell odours from our taps/shower etc.
We don't drink the house water, so we've tried a small amount of bleach at times in the tanks, seems to help and seems to keep taps/showerheads clearer of limescale!
Have heard some use Chlorine in tanks to make the untreated water a bit safer in regard to possible tummy upsets, bugs, maybe even Legionella.
Putting in new tanks seems a bit expensive!

Anyone got experience of tank cleaning? Cost? Contacts?
Tried any Bleach/Chlorine/Tablets Etc?
Will Chlorine or Bleach damage your Immersion heater or pipework etc?

Any Advice or experience?

We have used Betatek located in Alsancak on the main road opposite Starling. I think it cost about 100TL per tonne.

It would do no harm to have your tanks cleaned. They would need to be drained, the debris removed refilled and sanitised. There is probably a lot of scale in the bottom which can breed legionella though we are probably out of the season for that. It may not (the scale)necessarily cause the smell you refer to but cleaning would be a good place to start. How you go about it depends on tanks, availability to drain, availability of supply and location of tanks.

Hope that helps

Just a really silly question and no offence meant, but could it be your cesspit needs emptying by the local beledere, I know that sometimes when this happens it smells like the water tank, because you are running water and the smell rises, just a thought.

Have to agree with Barbieb. I had to keep the plug in the plug hole of my shower and hand basin because of the pong. Lifted a couple of the covers of the drains leading to the pit and low and behold there was a blockage. I poked around with a broom handle for a couple of minutes, it started flowing again and then got the garden hose on full power for 7 or 8 minutes and problem solved. Sometimes its the simplest things that are the problem. BTW I've been told that Alsancak Belly do not clean out soakaways any longer and they direct you to a private company. Maybe other Belly are more accommodating?
