SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN JANUARY

Do you enjoy Music hall? Believed to be the first for North Cyprus, the Girne Edwardian Music-hall Society (GEMS) is presenting two evenings of melodic and mellifluous merriment on Friday and Saturday, the 17th and 18th January, including songs from the Edwardian era, with some even dating back to Victorian times. It will also include World War 1 favourites in recognition of the centenary of that war. The GEMS are led by Francine Ash (founder of ChorusLambousa) with instrumental support from Mike Redman (lately of Stringfellas) on banjo.

You will be able to enjoy memorable songs such as Oh Mr. Porter, My Old Man said Follow the Van, The Boy I love is up in the Gallery (all Marie Lloyd favourites), Down at the Old Bull and Bush (made famous by Florrie Forde), Waiting At the Church, (with Vesta Victoria), Burlington Bertie (a Vesta Tilley favourite), Pack up your Troubles and many, many more.

These Music Hall songs will be sung by members of the GEMS, but, of course, CHIEFLY YOURSELVES! Song sheets will be provided.

Let your imagination run riot and come along in the fashion of the period (although this is optional.) There will be small prizes for the best dressed couple and the best ladies hat!

Did you know the original Music Hall evenings included supper? In keeping with this tradition we will be providing supper (meze, plated main course with a choice of 5 dishes, followed by dessert) at the Tervetuloa restaurant, Alsancak. The evening will commence at 6.30 for 7.00 with “supper” followed by the “Evening of Music Hall Melodies”. The cost is 45 TL.

The evenings are in aid of the Turkish Cypriot Diabetes Association; a charity where the proceeds are for the benefit of people living in North Cyprus. Did you know that Diabetes is a hidden danger? Many people maybe suffering from this illness without realising it. The Charity is trying to create awareness of this problem before it is too late.

creditwest bank has kindly agreed to sponsor our evenings.

By the way I posted this for a friend, but I have to say that the grub at Tervetuloa is always terrific (too much of it really, but a doggy bag can take care of left overs) and as diabetes is very much on the increase, this is a very worthwhile cause too. So I reckon (and I have booked my tickets) this is a bargain for a night out. (and I didn't get paid to say so!) oR IS IT THAT I JUST WANT TO SING 'iT'S A LONG WAY TO tIPPERARY'?

News is that tickets are selling fast. So now that the Festive season and the sore heads that go with it for some is virtually over (maybe I should leave this posting until Thursday!!!!) start thinking of the good things for 2014. This is one of them. Enjoy. Just get in touch with Grahame.
