Bank holiday today??

Went to Ozankoy Muhtar this morning in the hope of getting some christmas cards but notice on the door saying it is a holiday today?? It is not marked on my Turkish calendar or diary so presumably it is a TRNC day anyone any idea what for?

Last week we had to tell people in one of the Government offices that they had a day off today, but they didn't know!! Then again someone told me this morning it was to do with when Denktas died None of the shops appear to be closed though.

today is the birthday of the prophet Muhammad and against the traditions of Islam some bright spark here has declared it a public holiday at the last minute !

In the quran it clearly states that you shouldn't celebrate birthdays at ALL see this link

I understood it was the prohet's birthday, but it is also the second anniversaryof the deathof Denktash.It was Friday 13th January 2012. Definitely a Black Friday.
