We are regular flyers with TA, they are very generous with your allowance. We have been over by a few kilos a few times they never bothered. A friend of our just returned back from the UK with a 30 kilo bag, they never batted an eyelid.
Of course it depends how much over you are talking, they may just charge you at the airport if you are well over.

In economy you are allowed 20 kilo, they do charge 3 lira for every extra Kilo over if they enforce it.

I answered your question and it has disappeared so here we go again
if you go into their website and click on European a form comes up for you to book a flight
ignore it
scroll to bottom of page where there are various headings to select including one about excess baggage.
Incidentally I was 24 excess after Christmas and had to pay £172, that seems more than 3tl per kilo to me.
Hope this is helpful

It clearly states 3tl per kilo on their own web site so no idea what happened there?

I am regular flier with THY.
The latest charges to UK from Ercan was around 5 but I believce it went up to 8 Euros per kilo. I have not got a clue what they charge now, but I shall be travelling Istanbul on Saturday and I will find out for you the exact current charge from the check in desk
If you like puzzles - you can look at
http://www.turkishairlines.com/en-tr/tr ... ss-baggage
If you know the destination airport call sign in UK you will probably find the cost in euros under Zone 4 or zone 5 if you look across the "Turkey" row. To find out which zone your destination lies in - look up the table further down the page and locate your destination code.

Having said the above - some airlines do charge a lot less if you pay for your declared excess baggage when checking in online. I never did that with THY and I do not know if they do it. If they do have such an offer then it may well be that you can get away with a fraction of what you pay for excess baggage at check in. Details of that, you will only know if you check in online, but as I said I will find out from the desk for you on Saturday also...

Update;
Just solved the tables;
London (UK) from Turkey (and Cyprus) is "Zone-4" corresponding to 10 Euros/kg. So for THY to UK it is currently 10 Euros per kg.
HOWEVER! The charges are not the same the other way round - so if you are traveling from Uk to Turkey it is around 13 Euros! I was asked 10 pounds sterling per kilo from London on my last trip when I had excess baggage (which did work out near enough 13 Euros)

I flew back from Birmingham and did not pre-book the excess

Yes, you can pre book, but depending on how long in advance you book they will ask you to buy your tickets between 24 hours or 2-7 days after booking. Once you book, you can buy your ticket online if you use a credit card - you can also choose and book your own seats free and get an electronic boarding card 36 (or 48 I am not sure) hours before your flight. All you need to give before flight is the electronic ticket number they will email you and txt to your mobile. Usually, the earlier you buy the cheaper the fares are.
I'll find out for you about Birmingham-Ercan flight but I think they may not the info at Ercan for the other end. I stll say it is 10 pounds stg per kg. However, if you buy the ticket online read carefully if there is a note about the excess baggage you may wish to add. If there is, you will probably find it is a fraction of what you pay at the airport...
