If this story on Kibris is true then it proves that the lunatics are running the country. Who else would allow a hotel to be built on such an historically significant site also destroying yet another beautiful spot.

Surely there are enough hotels already complete or under construction that are blots on the landscape.

As far as I can see they are building a hotel at Escape Beach. For me that area's beauty is already destroyed as the centre there is very much heaving with happy tourists and it is a money making place for all. The people I feel sorry for are the houses round about that were build before the tourist beach centre. In a way building a hotel there is just adding to somethat that is already a fairly large centre. I thought for a moment I was going to read that they were plonking it in the centre of nature on, say, the Karpaz.

Not so sure it is 'lunatics' but it is certainly 'money'. Personally I would rather CreditWest gave me more money on my twopence in their bank than build an 'unnecessary hotel' because Ido agree we probably don't need it.

What about the water situation, another hotel taking what is already locally an issue surely.

I can clrearly remember about 4-5 years ago, a Government edict was published which said "no hotels could be built on the sea front unless and until they also built their own water desalinisation capabilities". Whatever happened to that I wonder? It was reported that the then Mercure actually had those facilities, but no-one to my knowledge has ever seen proof of that. (I would love to be proved wrong!!) I guess Credit West is going into the Casino business in a big way. Sad isn't it when asked by people back in the UK "what is the main source of income in the TRNC" and you have to answer "gambling and prostitution". The Government still say its tourism. Who are they kidding I wonder. Themselves?

The new Merit hotel has desalination system. These are not the be all and end all though as they create their own unique set of problems.

Used to love to visit Lara Beach which very unspoilt and we even watched the kingfishers as they fished from the large rock in the bay. Alas this has been totally ruined by the "prison block" hotel which now dominates the skyline. The lovely beach is no longer accessable to the public and the small beach restaurant has been bulldozed along with the little church which was there. How do they plan to attract the 4000 tourists to fill this monstrosity of a new hotel. Yet another massive blot on the landscape
