Hello All,
We are sending this in hope that maybe somebody can help.
There are 2 dogs constantly caged and spend most of their time yelping and barking. The cage is small, to say the least. The cage is in the front garden of a villa and we have never seen anyone living there. The villa is down the first turning on the left before you get to the Green Heights.
We live in Lapta, but we have seen these poor caged dogs when we do our walks. We don't know if anything can be done, but we felt that we needed to let people know. If you pass by that way perhaps you would have a look and see what you think. Thank you for your time.

It's an incredibly sad fact that many Turkish and Cypriots see nothing wrong in putting dogs in cages. I have tried talking and explaining to one family but all I got was this is Kbris not England. It breaks my heart to see some of these poor animals.

I don't know, but do KAR have any power to report any obvious case of cruelty to the authorities?

I can tell you that it seems to be 'normal' practice for Cypriots to cage their dogs. They simply think that is the way to treat dogs and have no qualms about it in my experience. I guess there are exceptions but most of them do not have the dogs in the house at all and it is part and parcel of the culture - quite different to the UK but normal for North Cyprus and many other countries in the med.

I see once more certain generalizations based on ehnicity which I do not particularly like.

It is unfortunately true that there are lots of dogs being kept in small cages or on chain most of the time, but this is by no means a problem of Cyprus.

I do not want you to be disrespectful to anybody, but I am not the one starting it. Please please please, stop the unnecessary generalizations. 'normal practice for Cypriots' what a full of rubbish combination of words that does not do anybody any good. The sooner you stop with the 'this is Cyprus' and 'this is how Cypriot/Turkish people are' business, and concentrate on the actual problem, only then your comments may be taken as something positive.

f.e., in the civilized America, they call it 'crate training' and people keep their dogs in their crates which is literally the size of the dog and keep them locked when they are not at home or when they dont want to deal with them.

In the civilized UK, they call them high-kill shelters(or pounds), where every stray dog that is picked up have a few days for the owner to show up or a new home found or they are put to death, I am so glad we are so different than the UK in this case.

Yes there are good and bad in all societies. I know many Cypriots who are as bonkers about their dogs as I am and I have seen some awful scenes of cruelty in the UK.

On the subject of "Cage training". I used a cage to house-train my dog. The cage was his "den" and never refered to negatively, it had his toys in it, he was fed in it and it was always a fun place. As it was where he ate he did not mess in it. As soon as it was time to come out he went outside and was "encouraged" to go to the toilet. He never once messed either in the den or the house and was trained very quickly. I have a friend in the UK who keeps her dog in a den overnight but she takes him for 2 walks totalling 3 hours every day and the dog goes to work with her in her plumbers van! "Cages" are not all about cruelty.

Unfortunately KAR is not the RSPCA (a misconception of a lot of people) KAR cannot enter private property to attend or rescue an animal. However, if the animals in question found their way on to the streets, that could possibly be different, but like it or not these animals are owned. I once tried to release an animal from dreadful circumstances about 5 years ago and I suddenly realised a police car had pulled up outside the property. A neighbour had obviously seen me, whilst the owners were out at work. It took a lot of sweet talking on my part to walk away scot-free. Would that the cage training you refer J. to is what the initial posting was about, but unfortunately not.

Sorry didn't mean to upset anyone by my comment, but until I came here, I had never seen a dog in a cage and Kemal knows how upset I get about putting a dog in a cage (Ice). I have always hated seeing rabbits in a cage, which is very popular in England - well I don't like to see any animal or bird in a cage. On talking to a friend in England about this, she said putting dogs in cages has become quite popular in England now, which I can't understand, when you think hows Zoo's/ Animal Parks have changed over the years to give the animals in captivity a much better environment. I'm going now before I upset anyone else
