How to get name deleted from Vehicle Log Book

My vehicle Log Book is in joint names, but now, only I remain. Can I delete the second name or is it necessary to have it changed officially, --if so where is this done, and is there a charge?
Advice would be appreciated.

Hi TDW,
I'm not certain if it's necessary to change the names, but to be on the safe side I suggest you go to the "Araç Kayıt Dairesi" (Car Registration Department) in Lefkoşa, behind the old Cyprus Turkish Airlines' offices. It shouldn't cost more than 10TL in stamps.

The Dog Walker,

I don't wish to intrude in your personal life, but if the absence of the other party is due to bereavement, then you would probably need documentation (possibly a minimum of a certified copy of the Death certificate, and quite possibly a Muhtar's letter) to substantiate the need for the change.

In any other circumstance, I think that you're looking at a 'standard change of ownership' type procedure which requires both parties to attend the local Muhtar in order to obtain a letter, copies of Passports etc, and which costs a lot more than 10TL.

I would advise you to explain the circumstances to your Muhtar, and ask for his advice.

The Log Book is viewed as the 'Kochan' for the vehicle - i.e. as 'proof of ownership' and can't be changed 'frivolously' - by which I mean that there has to be proper documented proof of the reason for the change of ownership.

But Keith, presuming that TDW's partner has indeed passed away, is having TDW's partner's name still on the log book ever likely to be a problem for TDW ... ater all TDW's name is on the log book ... my guess it won't be a problem. All the same ... as you suggested ... a chat first with the muhtar is probably best.

Hi Ian,

One circumstance where it might be a problem is if TDW wanted to sell the vehicle, when both owners as specified in the log book need to give their assent. I'm not saying that it couldn't be sorted out at that point - most things can be - but it's probably easier to bite the bullet now.

As to whether the additional name is ever likely to be a problem otherwise, it may well depend on which brand of TC officialdom TDW comes into contact with - the 'Problem!' brand, or the 'Problem Yok!' brand, and on whether the individual concerned got out of bed on the right side, that morning

Keith.

Thank you all for your prompt and helpful replies. The change is due to bereavement, but in view of your replies I feel there is now no urgency, so will let things rest for the time being and make the change when the Road Tax is next due. Thanks again. TDW

Keithcaley, I believe you are right in that the car can not be sold, and I have also heard that you now can not even scrap a car without all paperwork being up to date.
