We've booked flights in September to go to the above but as yet haven't booked a hotel!! If anyone has been on holiday there in the last year and would recommend where you stayed, could you let me know. We're not good at roughing it, but can't afford the Ritz either. Its a minefield as we haven't been before and am going dizzy reading all the blurb and "visitors comments" Thanks

We always use http://www.booking.com when finding hotels. You normally get a good choice at discounted prices, plus customer reviews. Also for a small increase you can book now, but not have to pay until you arrive/leave.

This one has more positives than negatives on Trip Advisor, also look on the "About Us" it has a video.

Our friends are literally just back and had a super time... The hotel did not look the best from the outside but they had nothing but praise for the quality inside. I will ask them for a hotel recommendation and post it up later...

There are many hotels just to walk in in 'konak'
We had no problems there at all.

It depends what type of hotel you would like.
We just had a b&b and it cost 60tl for both of us.

It was walking distance to the restaurants, big cameralti (spelling) pazar which is really huge and really cheap!
Lots of sight seeings etc. shops, etc.

Also you can get a boat at the ship station across the water to 'karsiyaka' its another town but abit more local.
You will need to pay for this card which is about 5tl and then you top up your card with any machine by station with coins or notes. It was about 1.75tl one way over the sea to the other side.
And boat time is aprox 15 minutes.

And it has a sensor chip on the card for the gates.
The boats run every 15 minutes with a load siren to let you no.
It's great! Sit inside or out. it carries many people and bikes etc.

You can also get belediyas buses with your ship card. (Make sure you have topped credit up)
Ships also go to a beautiful place called 'alsancak' there too.

But as for the hotel search Sophie you will have no problems at all.
Izmir is very very big.
We stayed there for 1 year traveling and just went with a suitcase each.
We started off at Mersin then got a coach to Izmir (12 hours)!!
And when we got to the station we got a taxi for about 40tl into 'konak' and the driver showed us 3 hotels and we choose our own price budget.

I love Izmir I always go back to do my clothes shopping there.
We came back to Cyprus with 5 suitcases (not 2)
And because of the weight we got a get a ship from Tassacu (spelling) near Mersin again.

Friends have just come back from the Walk In hotel and said the rooms were spotless the food was great. They has a suite which was cheaper/as cheap as a double. Anyway, it's a recommendation which is what you asked for after all.

Thanks everyone. Yep we always use Booking.com, it was just that there were so many to choose from and its nicre to get recommendations. I've been looking at Movenpik, Ramada and the Ismir Kaya as its a Spa hotel and to be honest haven't looked at smaller hotels. Just had a quick glance at the Walk In (isn't it strange how some names just stop you going into detail) and will study more later on. J&J - the Baylan looks terrific for so little money and at least they won't be full night after night with weddings. Thought you had shares in the place, your review was so glowing!! The problem of weddings are something we've read on a lot of the reviews of the large hotels including Movenpik, but I love the location and its not £100 a night when we want to go, even for a Superior double. .(staying 6 nights). I've been reading all about Alsancak and Karsiyaka on the web.

Our friends tell us they enjoyed the boat trip across the bay from Alsancak to Karsıyaka that they did it twice.

Lol I know it does seem OTT but honestly they were so nice to us. My friend was ill and they gave her flu tablets and they allowed us to bring our own bottle of wine in and opened it for us! Having said that if you are happy wiyh the Moevenpick price then I would go for it. The location is great and the breakfast is amazing. We also had a very nice evening meal in the restaurant. They also gave me a box of chocolates for my birthday I was just a little disappointed with the room.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and recommendations. We have finally chosen a Boutique Hotel that noone has mentioned as yet, its called The Met and was rated 10 by a lot of people and averaged 9.3. The double superior rooms are 38m sq. Some rooms, even in 5 star were as little as 22m.sq.

As far as ratings and feedback go I prefer the feedback on Booking.com to tripadvisor. With booking.com you have to have made a booking which you have completed in order to leave feedback whereas with tripadvisor often there is some "game playing".

It is always worth trying to get the hotel to price match the booking.com price as this can give you better loyalty points if you are in a scheme and often hotels are paying 25% + commission in town and city centres to booking.com

That's one of the reasons why we chose the Met, J.
