Renewing 90 day Visa

This is from a report of a couple who fled the UK for Northern Cyprus:

"The couple, who formerly lived in Leicester, renew their 90-day visitors’ visas by going to the border with Cyprus and getting their papers stamped without leaving the safety of Northern Cyprus. They can carry on doing this indefinitely, they say".

I thought that you actually had to cross and re-enter. Is that not so?

Odd! I would have thought that if you go to a border crossing in the north you get your passport stamped OUT of the country, not in.

B ut I guess what you are say8ing is that they cross at say Ledra Palace, wlak a few yards in, maybe have a coffee at HOme for Co-operation and then turn back and have an 'in' stamp ' given to them. Or if Metehan, then walk a few yards and return. How else could they do it, and in any case that is being 'naughty' is it not. And are they not using the system under false pretences.

Is there an inference here that if they actually went into the south they could be arrested?

How aware is our government of this, I wonder? And should we write and tell the Daily Mail that thereis something worng here? Obviously they are reporting what they have been told!!!!!

A further comment is that in the eyes of the world this makes us look like a haven for criminals and is NOT very helpful at this delicate time in the negotiations. I hope the government does something about this.

But maybe I am alone in my thinking. Something very wrong here.

Recently there have been several cases of people being "requested to leave the country". They are not extradited just the authorities have found good reason to ask them to leave.

As for the 90 day thing, they may fall foul of that soon. We have friends who have not intended to stay here for more than 18 months so did not follow the residency route. Got 90 days on entry, 90 days at first crossing to south, then 30 days and finally one only got 7 days and was told to get residency or leave!!

So, telling the press what they do to stay here this couple may well have written there own exit papers. Well we hope, as Marion says above the government does not want to appear a criminals haven.

Do not believe everything you read in the papers. The same story has appeared in Cyprus Today 8-3-14. They actually arrived here last October and in December moved to mainland Turkey. They arrived back here in February, so to say that about renewing their visas has not been tried and tested and it may well have been a dumb move on their part, considering the current situation, to broadcast this. It is a known fact however, that there are some, for their own reasons, who do not cross Greek side.

This couple are not criminals in the sense that they have robbed a bank, trafficked drugs or anything like that! Their son was made a ward of court after they left the jurisdiction of England & Wales with him, due to allegations made about the father, and so they have since been accused of kidnapping their own son. But I would say that there is more to this story than meets the eye. I hope the mother has the strength to seek independent help here, as there is usually no smoke without fire.
