Has anyone changed the sand in their pool filter recently?

If you employed some one to do it and live Karsiyaka - Lapta area, who did you use and how much did they charge?

Did it myself a couple of years ago! From memory, I opened up the filter and scooped out all the old sand by hand, although I could have just removed the fine sand at the top (which is what gets contaminated and turns hard) and left the course stuff. Do not use hard implements (like screwdrivers) to break the lumps as there are pipes in the filter which could be damaged. Put the new sand in, course sand at the bottom, then fine sand, close the filter, rinse and the job's done. The amount of fine and course sand you require depends on the size of your filter. Pool shops have the sand, or you can get it in Home Store down South.

We did ours a couple of years ago. I did it like the last poster, scooped out all the sand by hand, not easy and a bit messy, but did it over 3 days, there is a lot of sand in there. Replaced the sand which then cost £75. Our pool men quoted £150 to do the job including them buying the sand.
Must say it has made a huge difference to the pool, far cleaner looking, mind you it had not been changed for 10yrs.

CIH It is not rocket science you could do it yourself, I would even be happy to pop up and talk you through it. That said I do not think it has been in long enough to be honest, yes the companies will tell you it needs changing but often that is an excuse, I know plenty of 10-15 year old pools which are fine at lease one of which runs 24/7 in the summer. PM if I can help further

I was told not to change it all by a local man who runs a pool business and would have a vested interest in me buying more sand if I did, so I took him at his word and I'm glad I did - He said it would need to be topped-up. So I got a 20kg bag of fine grade pool filter sand and did that - it made a huge difference!

When I checked, the old sand level was low (you lose a bit every time you back wash) and it had been over seven years with no change. It was however quite loose so not hardened with scale at all. I swilled it around to get what debris I could to float in the water and scooped enough water out to get the level down - it was a bit smelly but then you'd expect that given that it traps everything! Then I topped it up re-sealed and did a back wash.... It's been fine. Cost me a 25tl.

That's about right Groucho, give it a good stir and top up about all that is needed.

Thanks for the tips, I will get in there and see what happens.

One question, how full of sand should the barrel be, are there markers inside?

The sand needs to be above the pipe coming in from the multi-valve normally around the area were the filter starts to arch for level if there is no marker.
