Help Someone Smile

Went to Dark Side today for fish and chips at Dehkelia. If you have not tried them I am not telling where the place is, do not want it over run. Friends who came with us today used to be in catering in UK so we were worried we had said too much but no, they agreed they are the best.

Back to subject. The GC immigration lady asked me to open boot of car and had listed all the contraband that she did not want to find. So up came the lid and I lifted the cover to spare wheel, then told her we were only going for fish and chips at Dehkelia. She obviously knew what I was on about and burst out laughing (think she was a London Cypriot) saying I had now made her feel hungry.

The point is, even immigration people will smile if you just accept they are doing a job. Like check out operators spending 8 hours hearing beep, beep, beep, sometimes they just want someone to speak to them.

A long way to go for fish & chips but driving along the road from Ercan to Beremudu crossing is a real eye opener. The villages are all so clean and tidy and just makes you feel good.

I thought you were going to ask for my false teeth??

Joking apart, this restaurant has been in the same place since 1982, although it was only a small wooden shack with two plastic tables outside.
The boss had a chippy in London prior to opening this wonderful place. His pork chop dinners are to die for as well.

Posts like this make you wonder why some people live in TRNC instead of the Dark Side when they love it so much. LOL

Know you have LOL at end but do not understand your comment silverfox.
Personally I go to south as little as possible when I do it is a "day away" and to explore a country I have never been to. Really want to go to Patagonia or Mongolia but RoC is best I can do for now. lol

Karmels, thanks for the follow up. The restaurant has a sign outside saying - here for 20 years or similar and it shows in the quality and the number of people who go. For now I still have my own teeth to smile with so you can keep the false ones!!!!! LOL

I live in the TRNC because I love it but it doesn t stop me from wanting to travel other places . We have often gone over to get the lovely fish and chips and have taken our guests with us , its a great day out . No different from when we were in the U K , a day out at the beach , may be a boot fair on the way and then fish and chips for lunch .Yum. But must say the Dehkelia ones are best

I agree that it's just a day out going to the South, somewhere different. Why do people call it the Dark Side, I always find that rather offensive. When I lived in Dorset, I generally went to the local supermarket in Swanage, but sometimes for a change I'd go to a supermarket In Bournemouth. It's good to see different people, and different things.

Good fish 'n chips outweigh anything, to some people. We used to go occasionally, with relatives that lived in Talisu. Didn't shop, just ate, and swam in the lovely shallows.
Don't go now, found somewhere on a par, without the 3 hour round trip.
Whiskey Joes, just off the square in Girne. Try them between 5 and 7 pm for 15tl. My wife gave them the thumbs up so they gotta be good.

Cyprusishome your thread made me smile for several reasons.
Firstly we enjoyed fish and chips at Dekhalia with our youngest son on his first decompression in Cyprus after his first tour in Afghanistan. The next decompression was at Tunnel beach and the attitude and atmosphere was very different to the gung-ho of the first for several, very sad reasons.
Secondly I too, realise that the immigration officers are all human, especially those at Beyamurdu, and we have had many a joke with them. Most recently our friend said to them no he wasn't the driver the ugly one was, she looked shocked and said he heard that! We all said yes and smiled, my husband(not ugly) included!
Thirdly Stellastar you made me feel so nostalgic, I lived in Swanage in the 70s and adored the place, still do. But oh gosh yes you did need to get out to Weymouth, Bournemouth or Poole and not just for the supermarkets............
Our friends live in Paphos and they down there call this the Dark Side!
Let's not get into the 44 syndrome, there are too many nice people and useful threads on Kibkom for that.
