Does anyone know if Girne council are intending to install new water meters, if they are do you know what, if any, charge will need to be paid.

We had to replace ours last year as the old one disintegrated. It cost a lot, around 1,400 tl. We are also paying a lot more for water. We dont really understand how the top up card works re the other charges that used to be on the bill apart from the water. We seem to be paying aroud 40tl a month now for 5 tons of water. It used to be 27 tl. No one at the belediye can explain how it works either when we asked. So to answer your question. I think at the moment they are just replacing broken ones with the card meter and I expect new flats/houses are fitted with the new meter. I havent heard that they are going around replacing existing meters if they are still working.

Did you get a 4 year guarantee with the new water meter and was fitting and calibration etc. included in the 1400 tl?

Years ago they told people in Bellapais they had to have these meters, My Father stood his ground for 18 months then paid £500 for his new meter the rate was 2.18, yes it sticks in our mind!. For the first 4 years great he used 10 ton and believed he was saving a future but then the goal posts moved, Bellapais went under Girne. They suddenly realised the cleaning charges, village lighting and all the other things on a water bill were not covered but as Bellapais still has a yearly village tax of 170tl my father felt this covered it therefore when he eventually needed water he found out there was 72 months to pay with of course a fine. They came to an agreement as he had to clear this fine before he sold the house. I now if people are very low users buy the minimum 10 units every 3 months and place it on the meter, some of customers now have 200 units in credit on their meters but as you can't just pay the costs without having the water what can 1 do. This way the fines are low plus every month I wash down where I wouldn't before.
