This time last year, Turkey's Yüksek Öğrenim Kurulu (YÖK), representing Turkish Universities, agreed to accept TC students (and mainland students studying in KKTC) to 89 of its universities according to the students' 'A' results. However, it was widely thought that TC students studying 'A' levels southside would not be considered for places in the Turkish universities, a move many thought was to deter parents, particularly those in Lefkoşa, from sending their children south for an education.

However, yesterday, KKTC's Minister of Education, Kemal Dürüst, told reporters they had never said there had been an arrangement to forbid southside-studying students from applying to Turkish universities. He added that competition brings with it quality, and that quality is the aim for private and state schools alike.
