I understand that Frontline does not work against sand flies but that Advantix does. Is Advantix available here and if so where - West of Girne preferably or something similar??
Otherwise it's a collar I assume?

You can get Advantix online but I think Firdez/Petcross have it. I tend to use collar and advantix at the same time however I stagger the application. I have seen dogs react to both sometimes they just seem off colour so I dont like putting fresh collar on with fresh advantix. The life of the repellent for sandflies in the advantix is quite short, shorter than the life of the other preventatives in it.
I think the key is to reduce the likelyhood.
A dog kept inside overnight when sandflies are most active is hugely less exposed so less at risk.
I spray high level in the rooms where the dog sleeps with Delta Mix available from the pest controllers near bamboo bar Alsancak. It kills sandflies when they land on it, it is also foodsafe and lasts for 6 months as long as not washed off. It also kills cockroaches etc. It is an international grade chemical.
I also spray the window nets and around the door stops.
Identify anywhere where you see or feel sandflies and spray there.
I believe though could be challenged that the infection is carried from dog to dog so can only be carried if an affected dog is bitten and then the same fly bites your dog so encourage friends to take measures and if you have a "community" dog perhaps get together and treat that too.
The recommendations are that you should have collars on year round however I tend not to worry too much in the winter.

Thanks for the info Jonnie.
I did try the web to source Advantix but a Vet's prescription is required.

Get it from the vets here - no problem. They only charge for the Advantix not a prescription.

The chemists that I use in Alsancak usually sells Advantix and it was she who told me it was actually cheaper than Frontline. This was last year, not sure about prices this year.

Success!!!!!!!!
Hyperdrug have accepted my order. I had to add Advantix to my wish list and then go to Checkout. If I tried to buy straightaway it kept asking for a Vet's Prescription and wouldn't accept.

I used a UK firm, in the UK it has to be prescribed by a vet however they are allowed to post abroad! Frontline in the UK used to be also prescripton but now can be sold there by specially trained personnel.

If you check out Scalibor Collars for dogs they also prevent sandflies and last 5/6 months.

I think you will find Scalibor and Paraband are one and the same, Intervet seem to market it under different names in different areas.

Hi Mr Mac, They've just this moment confirmed that the order is ready for despatch BUT they want a prescription.
I did ask for delivery to my UK address as I'm over there in 3 weeks and I don't trust the local mail. I've just asked if they will delivered to an address abroad without a prescription. Watch this space!!!!

I believe they will deliver outside the Uk without a prescription but I thought perhaps you might be charged tax or something for 'drugs' coming in? And like you I don't trust the post here!

I don't understand this at all, I ordered Advantix from Hyperdrug, maybe a couple of months ago now, but no request for prescription and it was delivered to a UK address but now in my cupboard here. Maybe the goal posts have changed.

They wouldn't send it abroad so I've cancelled.
A friend has offered to ask his friend to bring some out so that is my way ahead.
I haven't actually checked prices out here - I might be surprised!! I assume it is more than UK - approx 16.5 TL a phial with postage,
