As far as I know, you can only apply for one year at a time.

If you're over 60 you can apply for 2 years.
My 2 years is up in November this year, my old passport ran out in March of this year.
I have to carry both passports because the old one has the residency stamps.
I came back from UK on Monday. At Ercan passport control I just offered the new one.
After putting my details into her computer, she asked for my old passport.
I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have it.
I was told that I had to carry the old one, complete, until the new one had a stamp.
I don't recall being asked for double stamps, but I may have been.
Hope this helps

You can take your new passport (along with your old one) to Immigration and you can get your residency stamp put in your new passport for free (as you paid for it to go in your old one). I did this in March of this year. You only need to buy the stamp again.
