Hi all I have received an email from someone named Mert Ataner. From Near East College, It seems they are trying very hard to arrange an English day.~~~~This is the email.

We are planning to organise an event and a day called 'English Day'. It will be on 8 May, Thursday.

Location: Near East College, School Yard.

Plans: To have stalls (English desserts, food: fish&chips, etc...) Any ideas for desserts? I think it will be better to have only one kind of food (fish&chips) to make everyone try it...

May be you can help me finding some E-nglish people who can cook and serve fish & chips there...we can talk about the price and the profit we will get.

also, I'll be pleased if you can share your thoughts and opinions with me to improve this event...I am also planning to delegate some students to make a performance in English such as a short theatre play...but not sure yet. There will be music, dance and karaoke too but I will finalise everything next week starting from Monday.

We should find some other activities to increase our donations (amount that we are going to collect)

Could you please tell these English ladies whether they can come and take part in our organisation and make their dance performances. Also, it will be wonderful if they can wander around and talk to students... We can arrange a bus for them and the bus will take them from a central location that we are going to decide and then at the end of the day they will return with our bus.

Can you also ask these friends whether they can advise me other things related with our DAY. Such as English comedians or someone who can make a stand-up show for them but all of these will be for charity so these people must be volunteer.

In short, I would like to make an atmosphere that will make everyone feel the English culture, traditions, etc.

Thanks in advance, waiting for your reply as soon as possible.

Mert Ataner.

Please, these are only children and its seems they are trying hard, If you have any idea's , if you are able to help in some way, or know someone who may help please contact me for further information and contact details.Perhaps some English students at an English school here would also like to get involved and support them too. That would be a very nice gesture.

Thanks for any help with this one I will need it, haha. My email. mariavic@live.com phone 0533 839 5561.

I guess he contacted you because of the Line Dancers but there were many other organisaitons and people he could have contacted. As ot someone going along to cook Fish and chips, the poor man obviously has no idea whatsoever as to how this is done properly. Maybe a jam sandwich would be more British, or bread and lard like the good old Victorian Days. I don't know what you can suggest to replace it, or ask somewhere like Saltys or Cod Baba if they could help.

Joking aside - I think he has given you a hard one. Other schools havene this, and I think the Line Dancers have been involved.

I wish you luck!!!!

Someone has to co-ordinate this, - is that going to be you? Again, 'good luck'

Great idea and if my building work is going well I will try to be involved. I organised a children's party when I worked at a university in Ankara and it was apparent that party games are not part of the Turkish culture (probably includes Cyprus), the parents looked bemused but the kids loved it although they got a bit over competitive at times! So any things like pass the parcel, pinning the tail on the camel (my idea as a change from donkey), musical chairs, apple bobbing, throwing wet sponges at teachers in the stocks!! etc may go down well. (The last one perhaps not with the teachers the culture being very different but it is what we mad Brits do!) Folk songs relating to working in the fields or sea shanties might appeal if anyone has any, am afraid mine are in UK. Military music originated in Turkey so that is very much part of both cultures.

Other things like Maypole dancing could be fun, they may have seen the Olympic opening ceremony that took us through British social history so could be a good starting point for them to view it and get other ideas. If I think of anything else I'll jot it down. Send a private message if you would like to chat. All the best.

Always thought line dancing was American!

I reckon that sounds a perfect combination ' cooks and Cloister cat'. Come on Maria, it looks as if you are organizer. So all you need is a lot of cxooks to make up the tea time treat (and hopefully get some gingham table cloths with pretty potted plants in the middle of the table. Serve up the English Tea and Cloister Cat can give the kids the time of their lives.

You are correct- they don'tknow Britishplayground games.

I am always happy to help, but I don't cook (not if people want to stay alive), but an a great support group in one!

Sounds promising, doesn't it Spider?

Valid point,s but what I don't understand is that there are loads of English teachers connected with Near East, and I would have thought they could have done something. It is a pity that it is up there at Lefkosia. So much easier to be involved this side.

But I guess it wouldn't hurt to send an e mail to Mert. Actually Lapta School did a similar thing a couple of years ago and it worked well.
