Have been thimking of doing mine as has been 5 years plus but this seems rather expensive, any other quotes?

Try doing it yourself, not difficult, messy yes, but once you buy the sand its your time only. The sand is about £75 from memory.

It can be a pig of a job, especially if you have an underground pump room. That said often it just needs a top up with fine sand or stirring up so the water is not following channels.

Who says 4 years???? Oh the pool companies!

Remember to let the sand dry out before you try to move it...its a lot lighter especially if your pump room is below ground.

We did ours with a below ground pump room. Removed all the sand (wet) in buckets and then took apart the workings, cleaned etc. Put dry sand back in. Cannot really remember the cost but less than what is being advertised here. We took two days to do it as back breaking stuff.

Well I asked the advice of a well established pool cleaning company here and Murat of Esentepe Pools said... if I took off the filter lid and checked that the sand was freely distributed loose and not full of scale and not cloggy and channelled but just low (you lose a bit of the fine grade sand each time you back wash) then I should simply top it up with .5 - 1mm (the finest sand) and not need to replace it all... guess what? It worked a treat and my pool is sparkling again. That's after eight years!

To use a standardised period is unscientific. Some pools I know run 24/7 during the summer others 2 hours per day. Some have a massive bather load others a few dips a week. You simply cannot use a standard time.

Break the filter open a couple of times a year stir the sand up and check for clumping and calcification. Top up as required with fine sand as that is the sand that goes first when backwashing. I know several pools which have been doing that for in excess of 10 years without problem.
