Andrew, RCofT,
Although the new symbol was introduced on March 1st, I've not seen it typed anywhere. I even tried to copy-and-paste it from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_lira , but that wasn't possible

Actually it was possible to copy-and-paste the new symbol onto a word document ... but not onto here

I did not know it was officially changed, so I stick to TL! Lazy, maybe, but sensible. Not going to tear my hair out. and why have they changed it - it looks like a pound sterling gone wrong.

I didn't know it had changed either, suppose it gave some 'action group' a few hours of something to do. You're right Marion, it does look a little strange, until you see it magnified and then you can sort of understand where it might have come from! I've tried to attach a file to this post - if it works, this has the new symbol in JPEG format, if it helps anyone.

thanks. it is a bit like the sign for sterling with its head chopped off and slightly slanted! No doubt it will make its way into new keyboards, but as I said, I will stay with TL.

I saw this for the first time at Istanbul airport last month and this is what it all means:

The Lira symbol as a whole reflects the stability and increasing value of the Turkish Lira
The half-anchor shape symbolises trust, dependence or safety
The pair of parallel lines represent the Bosphorus Bridges in Istanbul which connect Europe and Asia

Only now have I noticed it appearing on some tv adverts.
