We did this a couple of years ago. Easy to catch bus at the airport and then on the metro/underground, very cheap too and straight to Taksim Square. Can't remember exact details and things may have changed. We asked at Ankara Travel, near the Dome Hotel and they had all the details. Maybe other travel agents would know too. Hope this helps.

Take the Havaş bus from airport to city centre at Taksim Square (12-13 TL per person)) - very comfortable and easy ride - takes same time as a taxi would - around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes depending on time of the day. Stop a taxi in the same road where you get off the bus and give the driver name and address of your hotel in Sultanahmet. That should take 15-20 minutes again depending on time of the day and cost maximum 20 TL if not less. So overall it will cost you less than 10 British pounds and take 2 hours from Sabiha Gokçen to Sultanahmet. It is the BEST way! I travel to Istanbul regularly and always stay around Taksim square. Find access to Sultanahmet very cheap and quick.

I have done this trip and it is very, very easy as you walk out of the main doors of the airport and these buses are right in front of you, just ask one of the many chaps around there which one is for Sultanahmet and off you go.

So I thought I would go onto their website and post the bus timetable for you and was shocked to see the announcement on their home page:

http://www.havas.net/en/OurServices/Bus ... rport.aspx

I do not know whether this is still a problem or whether the situation has been resolved and they have not updated the website to date but thought it was better that you know rather than get there then find the problem.

squashmad - Havas were "replaced" by Havatas coaches, with pretty much the same routes for 1-2 lira cheaper than the old Havas service. Unfortunately not as good service as Havas, but still worth the cost unless you are in a hurry, in which case the new extended underground network helps avoid traffic and works out cheaper.
