GC police open fire on TC car after driver refuses to stop
http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/pilede-r ... 38390.html
The details would seem unclear, but apparently last night GC police requested two TC bothers, driving from Larnaka to Pile, to stop their car.
For some reason the brothers, both registered as residents of Pile, refused to stop and then the GC police gave chase, firing shots at the TC car as they did.
The chase continued as far as Pile, where the police wanted to arrest the two bothers. However, GC police have no jurisdiction in Pile and so were unable to do so. The TC muhtar of Pile said fortunately there were no injuries.
In another report it writes the incident was now being investigated by Turkish and UN police.

Under the headline, "We sensed death was near" another report gives the two TC men's version of events.
One of the brothers, Süleyman Koçero, explained to the newspaper, Havadis "On the coastal road in Larnaka, a car cut in front of us. We didn't know at the time that they were plain-clothed police. We fled from the scene. The police opened fire on us. We drove at high speed to Pile. They continued to fire at us. They hit the car. Thank God we're OK. They fired two magazines of bullets at us. There were four of them. Firstly there were two in one car and then a car with two more police joined them. We didn't know they were police. In Pile they rammed our car and one of them pulled out a gun."
The Turkish police confirmed they found two bullet holes in the brothers' car.

Turkey's state broadcaster, TRT, has also reported the incident.
And in their report there is information as to why the police wanted to talk with the two brothers - their car is Greek-plated, something that TCs resident in the mixed-community village of Pile can do.
Still doesn't explain why they felt it necessary to open fire though.

Much made of the fact they were TC brothers but if they had greek number plates how would the police know they were TC?

I also wondered that Deniz. It's very rare for plain-clothed police to stop anyone.
I get the impression the police had been watching the brothers for some time.
Were the brothers up to no good? Possibly.
However, if the police had been watching them, then their attempts to arrest the brothers weren't too clever, particular trying to do so where they had no jurisdiction ... with onlookers watching everything.
In any case, hopefully the truth comes out ...

Is there any proof that they actually were police?

I honestly think that the numberplates being TC or GC; and if the occupants are Greek, Turkish or from Timbuktu is completely irrelevant.
If the police (in any country) instruct you to stop and you make a break for it you can hardly play the 'victim'

Mutleypete,
The brothers claimed to not know they were police. It's very likely the brothers did know though ...

It's amazing Paul - in virtually every report, the story seems to change. In today's

there's no mention of Larnaca; it all apparently happened in Pile ... and it's something to do with borrowing a friend's car ... apparently ...

A MAN, 64, and his son, 41, from Larnaca have been arrested in connection with the theft of cars they believe are being sent to the north.
Three more people are wanted in connection with the suspected theft ring.
According to reports, police were conducting investigations in the Dhekelia area after a tip-off that a Mercedes, which was stolen on May 30 in Kiti would be transferred to the occupied areas.
According to reports, during surveillance, officers spotted a man getting out of the 64-year-old’s vehicle and head towards the stolen car, which had been given Turkish Cypriot number plates.
The unidentified man managed to escape with the stolen car when the police intervened, while the 64-year-old and his son, 41, were caught.
At around 7pm the same night the stolen Mercedes was once again found empty and locked in an area of Larnaca.
Police remained in the area and observed another vehicle with three people approach the stolen car. They signalled the driver to stop but he sped off.
Officers fired warning shots, and while pursuing the vehicle, the patrol car lightly hit the suspects’ car but was unable to stop them. They crossed to the north through Pyla. The driver and two passengers are all believed to be Turkish Cypriots

Yes, Wanderer that is what I heard (just) and was going to post what I heard and you have got there first. I heard that the car was stolen and that is why the police were chasing. sop it is NOT a case of GC's aganst TC's, but of some cops doing their job. Puts a bit of a different flavour on it all doesn't it. But it is worrying that these things get misconstrued and that GC's are judged as being anti TC, when it is not the case.
Thanks for sharing that Wanderer - very helpful.
