We can use our phones in the South now (soon)

Just read on the Cyprus Mail online that the ridiculous situation with mobile phone use North and South is about to change. The Chamber of Commerce has been trying to get this changed for some time and they say from a week or so's time we will be able to talk cross-border, and vice versa for GCs. I put this down to the Deep Purple concert being such a good confidence building measure and no, it's not April !st!!!!!!!

I have used my trnc mobile many times across the border to make and receive calls as long as I am still in signal range.

We thought this would happen when Vodaphone bought Telsim but sadly it did not, presumably Turkcell with have to tie up with a GC network? Our phones only work near the border & sometimes at Larnaca for some unknown reason.

Just waiting for BRS to claim another victory!!!!

Its about time and shows the slight "easing off" in political confrontation and more power of the people.

Why do people keep having a 'pop' at the BRS. Didn't think they were doing any harm! Surely can only do some good. Enough said perhaps!!!

Happy day if the Greek SIM cards work over here , call charges are about a third of the price in the South a bit of healthy competition might see call charges reduce over here.

Does anyone know if there has been anything in print on this side of the divide to confirm or otherwise the article in the Cyprus Mail? (Note that in this post there is not one mention of the BRS!)

I was in Ledra Street on Wednesday and my TRNC phone/SIM card definitely worked.

About 18 months ago my TRNC phone rang whilst in Alpha Mega and İ had a very clear conversation with someone in Lapta. İ've never tried making the initial call South to North, so don't know what happens then.

MTN SIM cards due to go on sale in various outlets, good info.sims will be free on pay as you go. Good to see the south companies taking the lead here, cheaper calls just wonder if internet may also see improvement.

I have to agree, a decent internet supplier would be a real bonus! I already use CYTA for most of my calls (perfect reception in Bogaz).

This is a good news story, not only in terms of 'phoning between north and south, but also in terms of call charges for any visitors using British mobile phones. Prices in the EU are regulated, and roaming charges have come down in recent years thanks to European Parliament intervention.

'Confused' is right, you can get good CYTA reception in places like Bogaz because the signal comes across water without obstacles in the way. (Indeed in some parts of Bogaz and Famagusta you can can even access networks form the Lebanon!). The trouble is the minute you go inland (even a few meters) the signal can disappear.
