Water pipeline system

Does anyone know if there is any information or office open to the public which gives details of the water distribution project for the north of the island?

As an ex plumbing engineer i would love to find out how the system has been designed. I live in Bahceli and on a purely selfish level, would like to know if the pipeline was coming our way.

Having watched all the ductile iron pipes and fittings being delivered to storage areas along the coast, it would seem that the plans are moving on apace. I must admit i am glad i am retired, this whole project is a mammoth task. Good luck to them...

Hi Confused, thanks for the links, but these are about the water line coming from Turkey to Cyprus, i have already seen these videos. I was hoping to find some information about how the water will be distributed all over the north of the island. Having seen all the pipes and fittings being moved around the place over the past couple of weeks, i would imagine that there is already a plan and the work will soon get underway to lay these pipes.

I doubt there is any information available to the people responsible for the installation, let alone to the public! Common opinion is that the money already paid by Turkey for stage one of the pipeline installation, as far as Lefcosia, has already been spent on other things and that Turkey have refused to fund any further installation until that bit is completed!
It may be sometime before it gets as far as you!

It will be a darn sight longer until it gets to me in Bogaz. Ali Safa will block any attempt to usurp his water supply scam!!

What are the odds on there being no leaks in the system?

I've seen the various staging areas doted around with the stacks of very large black water pipes waiting to be installed. The thought has crossed my mind I'm sorry to admit, that the international professional expertise is involved in getting the water from Turkey to the TRNC but after that the project may go awry. I really hope that thought is totally wrong as the benefits to the north will be immense I think. I was also hoping that electricity and telecommunication cables would also accompany the water but I suspect that is a non starter. I can only imagine just what a massive boost to the economy they would also bring.

Well thanks for the replies. I hope Waddo is wrong, but i fear he may not be. As for the leakage issue. Ductile iron water mains should last for around 100 years if installed properly and should be tested upon installation to 1.5 times the expected working pressure so any leaks should be found and repaired before the trench is backfilled. I will keep my eyes open for any movement of pipes form the storage area near the Acapulco hotel and see if i can find any pipelaying in action.

Geoff.

There are obviously people on this forum far more knowledgeable than I on the subject, that being the case can someone explain to me why, if the pipes are just going to allow for water to flow, are the pipes so huge. If they were for brown water and other sewage I could understand it, but for "ordinary" water' I just don't understand.

Sophie, think of the distribution system a little like the human body and the roll the heart plays in moving the blood ( water ) around the body. The heart is the pump and the arteries that leave the heart are the largest ' pipes ' in the pipeline. As the blood ( water ) flows and breaks up into smaller veins there are more veins coming from the large arteries and even smaller veins coming from the other veins.
The largest pipes will be used near to the main pumping station and from there the water will be sent out in all directions using smaller pipes.

I'm sure that if there was anything amiss with the project, the fearless investigative reporters from Cyprus Today would be hot on the trail!

Geoff1131 the link I've posted is nothing to do with North Cyprus but what happened in
Izmit Turkey regarding their domestic and industrial water supply project.

It seems(to me) a lot of expensive work needs to be done, pumping stations etc. where are these in North Cyprus? also a lot of aftercare needed too. For someone with your background you could be in your element with this project

Dalartokat, Thanks for that link, very interesting and i noted that other companies were involved in the project ie Thames Water and the construction firm Taylor Woodrow amongst others. The scheme in Turkey was, or is a lot more complicated than the one here in Cyprus will be, but it gives a very good comparison. If the pipeline is installed properly it could make a tremendous difference to this side of the island, not only supplying drinking water to almost all of the residents here but also for the agriculture industry which given access to the water should become a major player in terms of exports.

Chris, i wish i had the energy to come out of retirement, but i have only just adjusted to not working. The hardest thing i do now is deciding whether to have Efes or Carlsberg when i go for a drink.

"Efes or Carlsberg when i go for a drink."

Now that's what I'd call a decent pipeline if that gets here!

Bit off topic I know, but still very important to us retirees whether to go for the Carlsberg or efes. Tough one, but I`ve come down in favour of the efes. Cheers Geoff1131. (Is that the year you were born hic!)

Thanks for that Geoff 1131, makes sense now. My next task is to figure out where all the pumping stations are.

Hector, i could be tempted out of retirement for a beer pipeline!!!! and silverfir,,,,, cheeky, the 1131 was my employee number when i worked on the construction of the King Saud University project in Riyadh Saudi Arabia back in the early eighties. I worked there for nearly three years and you had to quote the number every time you got paid or claimed expenses so it is sort of ingrained in my head. And sophie if i see any activity anywhere i will come back and let you all know.

Geoff,

I seem to remember reading that the infrastructure to get the water distributed was going to be in 3 or 4 phases, Esentepe was to be in phase 2 as I recollect. We are in Esentepe so the sooner phase 2 comes the better. Am hoping that this year will be the last of water shortages but not going to hold my breath.
