Re: Heart specialist
Cardiology check - tread mill, blood test, and ultra sound at Kolan - 150tl.
I now know I have a slightly leaky mitral valve, but the specialist said it is not bad enough to do anything with, I believe I had an honest opinion, with no attempt at all to try to sell unneeded services.

Re: Heart specialist
An angiogram is highly invasive as it involves opening an artery and inserting a probe. It is a last resort and is anyway far superceded by CT scanning which is non-invasive and you can get at Near East Hospital.
There are many tests that doctors can do before either of the above becomes recommended. Both Kolan and Near East have all the expertise you would require but, although more expensive, Near East is probably the better bet as it has all the latest technology and the head of their Cardiac Unit is an accredited and experienced transplant surgeon (just in case).

There are alternative non-invasive procedures still called "angiogram" and the CT coronary angiogram is one of them so, Deniz1 I'd ask them what type of procedure they envisaged before getting too scared - it may just be their communications skills that have you worriedJBA wrote:An angiogram is highly invasive as it involves opening an artery and inserting a probe. Re: Heart specialist
If you value your health get a specialist to check you over in the U.K. and not the hillbillies they produce here, we have had several friends in the TRNC die because they were basically completely wrongly diagnosed, it was only when they got back to the U.K. to be checked they found out exactly what was wrong with them by which time they only had only months to live, if the doctors here hadn't of been running around scratching their heads for months they would still be alive today, my opinion is don't risk it.

Munchkin,
12 thousand unnecessary deaths in the UK every year ,that's approximately 250 a week due to wrong diagnosis in the NHS.
All is not perfect in the UK.

Have to say my husband couldn't have had better treatment than he did when he had heart attack. He had a stent put in his heart within 90 minutes of him having a heart attack at escape beach.
He went to Girne hospital where they did tests and then blue lighted him to Lefkosa. The doctors in UK said he had no damage to his heart because of the swift treatment. He has even been given clearance to dive again from specialist doctor.
No moans here about treatment in TRNC.

Re: Heart specialist
My friend took your recommended course Munchkin. He went to UK in June, got an appointment for tests in early October followed by an appointment to discuss the results on 2nd January. He died of a heart attack at 2am on Boxing Day.
If he had stayed here and gone to (say) Near East he would have had his tests that day and necessary treatment within 1 week. Sure he would have had to pay but he would still be alive.
And as for your comment about hillbillies, there are bad doctors here as there are everywhere including the UK. But there are also excellent doctors here and Near East especially has recruited from all over the world to get the best and they have provided them with the most up-to date equipment.
Maybe you should ascertain a few facts before you display your ill-informed prejudices.

Re: Heart specialist
The heart specialist at Cyprus Life saved my life three years ago - no complaints here. He has since moved to the Kolan as well and even though he is as old as the hills he continues to be my heart doctor. I get to see him straight away whenever I have a problem or think I have - no waiting list to die in the chair in the waiting room here - straight in to see whatever specialist I need at the time and that is top class service. Yes, you pay for it but the old saying I learnt as a motor cyclist keeps dropping back into my mind every time I pay a doctors bill: If you have a ten bob head, buy a ten bob hat!!!!! My life is worth more than a plane trip back to UK and a waiting list on the NHS!!!!!!
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Always get a 2nd opinion (or even a 3rd if the first 2 are conflicting), you have to take responisbility for your own health over here and it is very easy to just accept what a doctor says however they are in or running a private business and they are out to make money.
Can you go south? Another alternative, can you go to Turkey?
So please check all options available to you before committing.

You're very quick to attack my opinions JBA and accuse me of being prejudice, as for facts I can give plenty but not to a bigot JBA, wind your neck in.JBA wrote:Maybe you should ascertain a few facts before you display your ill-informed prejudices.
I would not trust 100% a diagnosis from a doctor here. go to Harley Street and get a diagnosis from the best doctors in the world it could save your life.
O.K. I'm ready for your next attack JBA !
All good luck to the poster.

Re: Heart specialist
My husband had a heart attack here 5 years ago, the state hospitals in Girne & Lefkosa were brilliant but at that time there were no facilities here for angiogram so we had the option of South or flying him to Turkey.
He had excellent treatment at the American Heart Hospital (now I think called the American clinic) & still goes for 6 monthly check ups. They have been around a lot longer than the new facilities/teams on this side if you are nervous of trying them.

Update I saw three doctors yesterday and ended up at the Kolan in Lefkosia today. Another treadmill test and was told you do not need an angiogram there is nothing wrong all your tests are normal. I am VERY relieved.

Deniz1, have you been back to the original cardiologist and informed him/her of the outcome? I ask because my wife is also undergoing cardiac monitoring and has to return in two weeks for an exercise tolerance treadmill test.

No I havnt to be honest I dont want to go there again I have been so stressed this past week I cannot face him again. But I suppose he was doing what he thought was right if I give him the benefit of the doubt. Dr Cagra at the Kolan in Girne was so helpful and again when I saw him today in Lefkosia. I hate treadmills and I thought I wasnt going to make it again but they all encouraged me to finish the test and I did boy was I pooped afterwards. Good luck to your wife.

Lottidotti - don't know where you get your info from but you are typical of the half wits who forget the millions of ops the NHS do successfully despite interference from the privatisation brigade including this horrendous government we find ourselves under and people like yourselves who would take us back to pre 1948 - get a life - before it is too late !!

Well said Sandman there are too many people taking from the NHS that have not put a penny into it [taxes] it should be like it is here if you want treatment, pay for it, if your not a british passport holder that is.Sandman wrote:Lottidotti - don't know where you get your info from but you are typical of the half wits who forget the millions of ops the NHS do successfully despite interference from the privatisation brigade including this horrendous government we find ourselves under and people like yourselves who would take us back to pre 1948 - get a life - before it is too late !!

Re: Heart specialist
Sandman,Topten, If you read my post again I was just stating facts as reported in the UK by no less than the NHS themselves .At no time did I give an opinion of the NHS good or bad.I did not give an opinion on privatisation .
I did not give an opinion on people who use the NHS without putting a penny into it.
At no time was my post confrontational, and was certainly not a rant unlike yours, just one and a half sentence of facts.
I am just the messenger.

I've put a fortune into the NHS over the years and still do as my pensions are taxed in the UK - but, although a British passport holder, I am not entitled to free treatment because I have no UK address. So you could hardly expect me to have any sympathy for the NHS who take my money and give nothing in return.

When it's gone and we all have to rely on a USA style system I suppose you will all bleat about its loss like so many other aspects of our society which are being destroyed by this current shower of toss pots ! The NHS does a pretty amazing job despite the interference and tinkering started by an evil cow in the eighties ! Now we have silly old buggers getting upset on a forum because their ill informed statistics are challenged. Get a grip !!!
