A friend has just recieved her new passport from UK, no sign of old passport yet, she understands this will follow in "due course". Obviously new passport has no residency stamp in, so does anyone know what the procedure is if she wishes to travel to UK this weekend? And , when old passport finally arrives, do you really have to carry both passports with you as proof of residency? Thanks in advance for any advice/answers

As far as I know you keep the old one forever, need to show it along with the new one until residency stamp is in the new one. Presumably immigration can see it is a new one, and if the old one is not back in time, their computer records should show your status anyway!!

jen ..
Take your new passport to immigration ..
A stamp is required, was 9TL when we took ours, and is obtainable in the canteen ..
Immigration will then put the necessary in your new passport ..
