A different dog problem.

I'm now wearing full body armour so here goes. I live in Lapta and to be perfectly honest stray dogs are NOT the problem where we live, yes there are a few around, and they still are around, the problem is the ones that are either kept chained up in the garden or are allowed to wander freely while their owners take no responsibility them.
Across the way from us there are four dogs that have made our lives a misery, two at one house and two more at another two houses, they bark, and bark, and bark, most of the day and all of the night, every night. One of them in particular chases after cars and motorbikes, snapping and growling, children are afraid to go past the gate if it's around, and the owner sits there and watches this.
We have been to the Belediyesi, the police, but nothing is done, we are now at the stage when we are going to sell our home because we can't put up with endless sleepless nights and the constant barking during the day
So while I feel sorry for any dog that is treated in a cruel way, believe it or not I do like dogs, I wish most sincerely that the nuisance dogs in our area would be dealt with, or at least their owners, by whatever powers are in place.

I very rarely put my head above the parapet but I am in total agreement. We live in a beautiful spot and the only thing that has ruined our enjoyment was someone else's dogs. Thank goodness the offender has now left. Some owners are responsible but a lot here, Brits included, just let their dogs roam and constantly bark day and night. We know that as soon as dusk comes the dogs start barking. It is very soon a doggy chorus. Luckily now, these are in the next village so not too much of a problem. I do not wish to tell TC's what to do, it is their island but the Brits should know better. Many have multiple dogs, and I applaud them for helping the waifs and strays, but please think of other people. They would not do this in the Uk

Have just donned my armour too, because I agree with you. I won'[t leave my dog at home alone cos I know she barks and barks, sand that is because I respect the lives of others. Wish some of my neighbours did the same. They let their dogs roam in the street, and one at the back has four puppies which are let out in the evening. Plus some are in the street greeting each other loudly at 6a.m which I find a bit difficult. O.K. for hubby as he is deaf!

But what to do. No point reporting to the Muhtar here (or former one) as one of the dogs is hers. Report to the police? Hmmm. They just warn and then people do what they want. Understandable to a degree in a rural area but until people recognize the rights of all animals, four legged and two legged, nothing much will change. If only people would at least live as Mrs D0-as-you-would-be-done-by from the Water Babies.

It is really to do with education, and one would expect ex pats to BE educated, but sadly t'aint so.

We live in girne and had the same problem. It took several trips to the belediye before someone came out to see the problem. The people were told to put the dogs at the back of the house. They didn't comply the first time. So we complained to belediye again. This worked and they were moved to the back. I think the dog owners were kept awake then as the bedrooms were at the back and they could hear the dogs. Dogs were gone after a couple of days. We and 3 other neighbours went together as we felt the more people who complained the more they may listen. So keep trying. Good luck

Its a problem for many dog carers, as well, since we dont necessarily want our dogs barking alll the time, and it is not always possible to take several dogs with you everywhere, particularly if you dont have an AC car in this heat.

The problem is what to do about the things they bark AT: marauding and yowling cats, passing revelers returning from pubs, strays wandering around, motorcycles revving etc. I keep my own dogs in at night, and leave them indoors when I go out but it restricts my life, and I understand others who arent prepared to make that sacrifice and I still get noise from other dogs and can trace the progress of the intruder down the street as other dogs are set off - but its part of living here and I find it easier to cope with than loud music from pubs in the early hours.

Dogs that are lonely dont bark - they Howl. In pain or hungry or afraid they whimper

btw one trick: dont feed a dog when you return it will make it even more anxious when you go , even if you have brought it a titbit from lunch, save it for later. Give up a biscuit or some kind of treat just before you go out - it will distract its mind, and hopefully reassure it you do love it and will return. Also makes it associate changing your shoes with food, instead of wallkies!.
