Update on Residency for over 60's
Hi to all still wishing to do residency or visitor renewal as it is still called.
Went to Lefkosa this morning and it was a doddle as this is what we handed over.
PASSPORT + COPIES OF PHOTO PAGE AND LAST YEAR VISITOR STAMP
PINK BOOK
MUHTERS LETTER
WHITE RESIDENCE APPLICATION FORM - This we completed before we went (but didn't date or sign)
10TL STAMP
We paper clipped all the paperwork and stamp together and received a beaming smile from the chap serving us when he looked it over and saw that everything had been done for him, he then showed it to the two servers either side of him as if to say this is how I like to see it. We did take with us our Bank Statement and Rental Agreement but he didn't ask for them so we didn't give them. Popped along and paid 250TL each and then received back our Pink books and Passports duly stamped for another year.

Suggest a trip to Immigration (Lefkosa) to explain the circumstances/their view/decision. You will only get expat opinion here. Good luck.

They will simply back date, it happened to us, the immigration guy didn't even question why we were late

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
Hi Rcst
Our's was not due until 9th September so not a problem for you to go early.
We always started the process a month early because of the blood test etc when one of us was still under 60 but now just go any time within the month that is convenient to us as it is just the one visit to Immigration and it is done on the day. Your passport will be dated to start on its due date irrespective of when you go.

All well and good if you go to the South regularly but your sentence included 'must remember' to go before end of October. Us like all the others who continue to do their residency are quite happy to only 'have to remember' once a year and not worry about how long is it since I last went South. I rest my case

BOERBOEL .. You have just reminded me .. Don't need to go south .. Going to Turkey mid October ..
Flying in & out of Ercan .. Get the stamps put in my passport & not on the white paper ..

Not over 60 yet but surely you get the same stamp as residency or work permit people ie no days stated. If they put days surely it means you do have to leave and their gentleman's agreement is just guarantying if you go south you will get 90 days. I can now well understand why people are still doing their residency even if it says temporary, as Metehan and others were not classed as legal borders pre 74 which always seems to come up when they need it to go their way.

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
Why is it that when we go South via Metehan or fly out back into Ercan do they want to see our residency? We have both renewed passports,so have to carry both so they can check. We are both over sixty,if you don't need temporary residency over 60,why is this necessary?

Becker, The reason for this is that the Immigration / Police officer is doing his job by the letter of the Law,if anything goes wrong with this so called agreement re residency, the officer has covered his back and cannot be blamed by his/her bosses.

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
When we went to renew our residency in February, we asked & were told that as we are both over 60 it wasn't necessary ..
They added that any problems with the border police, tell them to ring immigration .. To date no problems ..
Quote from previous post "We have both renewed passports,so have to carry both so they can check".
No you don't have to carry both .. Go to immigration & for a 9TL stamp (which it was when I did ours) you can have the "visitor" stamp transferred to you new passport .. I did this last year ..

It should give you all the up to date information you need.

How many times have you tested this process where a call is made to immigration?harita wrote:When we went to renew our residency in February, we asked & were told that as we are both over 60 it wasn't necessary ..

Do any of you keep up with things in the UK like the drivers who get away with violating traffic laws and a so called 'Mr Loophole' legal representative who gets celebrities off over legal technicalities? If so - then when you and your 'not actually adhering to the strict letter of the law' status come up against a local over anything then you can bet your boots that not having a proper stamp in your passport will somehow miraculously go against you.... after all due process is due process. If I was a local and I had a problem with an expat I would expect my brief to bring up the legal status of the expat with no stamp...
Those people who have decided that they believe the authorities when they 'say' this is not necessary if you are over 60 will hopefully 'get away with it'... I don't wish problems on anyone, however until such time as this is made a legal position that will hold water I don't see that it's advisable to either take the chance or advocate taking the chance to others.. I notice the BRS kind of shy away from giving absolute recommendations in this respect...

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
Ok, probably in trouble for posting the same thing on two threads but here you go:
We went on our annual pilgrimage yesterday morning to the Immigration office in Lefkosa. Set off from home at 08:15 and stopped in the Girne Tax Office on the way to tax the car. Got caught up in the normal - going to work late and one child per car mothers taking their kids to school - traffic jam. We were finished and sat having a coffee in the cafe by 10:20 with everything done and dusted - both us and the car.
As I am over 60 and the wife is 59 and 11 months 1 day, we were both offered 2 years visitor status but were told it may not be worth it as later this year there will be a release of the new white card that will allow us "Permanent" status", the lady could not give any guarantee of when or any idea of how much but she told us to watch the papers as there was supposed to be an announcement "This Month", meaning September.
The lady at immigration also told us that because we were over 60 we did not really need to re-new our residency - HOWEVER - if we were driving then it was a legal requirement to have a residency (Visitor) stamp in our passport!
Just the facts mam, won't post again on this thread honest!

Have had no need to Groucho haven't had any problems .. My car is 13 years old .. Anyone with a valid licence can drive it with my permission .. Confirmed by my insurer ..
If it's good enough for David Brown (BRS chairman) not to renew his residency, then it's good enough for me ..

The fact that you've never tested this 'ring the immigration office' process (who let's face it - are not open 24/7) does not fill me with confidence that it will suffice... I think you want loads of people in the same boat as you so that there is strength in numbers but you've made that choice - good for you.... are you going to indemnify anyone who loses-out if they take your advice and it turns out to be a bad idea? No?harita wrote:

To be honest I think you sound quite gullible - prepared to believe anyone who tells you anything that sounds good and a way to save money.... I suggest you may be need to get a dose of 'real world' down your cake hole.... I don't need chill pills thanks but then I'm not breaking the law....harita wrote: If it's good enough for David Brown (BRS chairman) not to renew his residency, then it's good enough for me ..

Groucho ..
When I went to renew my residency the man behind the counter in immigration said he didn't want to take my money ..
Do you seriously think I would twist his arm up his back to take it ..
How can you fix something that isn't broke .. Never had a problem to test it ..
Noone at the border blinks an eye now .. Maybe when they type my passport no it says "over 60 residency exempt" ..
As for the "real world".. Seen more of it than you are ever likely to see ..
Gullible I may be, aren't we all .. Some more than others ..
I rest my case ..

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
Could the BRS write officially to the government minister responsible for this and ask for the answer? If you are 60 or over, do you need residency permission? That way, if the reply is that over 60's don't need to register or renew then at least we have it officially in writing.

Excellent idea.
Can I ask about Work Permits? I work part time. There are no part time permits. It is a full time permit.
If you take any form of payment, can you call it 'A Gift', Expenses etc. ? I do not think so. It would have to be declared in your tax return, as I understand it? I used to organise Speaker Lunches/Dinners to raise monies for St Andrews Church & other local charities. I was told that I needed a Charity licence & to pay tax on the income to continue, so I stopped.
I hold a Work Permit, I am well over 60 years. I questioned if I should/should not still have to renew my permit. I called the BRS, awaited a reply and the reply was that to be safe, I should carry on. Not exactly a defined answer? I am about to renew again for two years, should or should I not renew?
It is quite expensive, I have to have a blood test etc. BUT, I do realise that if I work until I am 100 (as the goal posts keep getting moved) I will get a pension and that I can use the hospital services for free (now). However, I have BUPA cover at great expense too and get treatment where and when I require it ,in comfort. Have to say, the medical services here are excellent, you will not get better in the UK!
Any thoughts please?

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
As far as I know - and it may have changed since I started typing this - you have a choice! Either you have a work permit which, as long as you keep paying your sigorta, will give you benefits in the long run. Or. You have a visitor permit (locally known as a residency stamp) in your passport.
What is interesting with yourself is what would happen, because you are over 60, should you stop your work permit? Legally you would then need a visitor stamp and may have to start from square one all over again! But with this unwritten agreement from the government, aledgedly in place, you may just be able to cruise on by ignoring the law.
I would take this question to immigration and get the response in writing (in Turkish) if I was you - just to be on the safe side. Good luck.

Hi Mrs. Boerboel,
You have been very specific at Msg 1 with the requirements for Over 60s Residency renewal, but I just want confirmation that they did NOT require copies of Kocan and Bank Statemenmt.
Thanks in anticipation. PB

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
Hi PapaBravo
As I said in my post we did have our Rental Agreement and Bank Statement with us but didn't hand them over only gave them what I had put in message 1. If you check the BRS website you will see that it states that for over 60's you only need to produce a Kocan/Contract or Rental Agreement if you have moved since your last residency renewal and I took a copy of this statement with me although didn't need to show it. It does say proof of income is required ie. Bank Statement of some sort but as I am loathe to give them this information I don't volunteer it.
The chap that served us didn't ask for proof of income but you could get someone who will in which case you may have to hand it over so probably best to at least have it with you as we did.
Hope this helps
Mrs. Boerboel

PB, did mine on Monday. Gave them a copy of rental agreement but not bank statement. They did not ask for either but were happy with the rental copy as it proved the address in the pink book, but then again, so did the Mutar letter. Don't figure!

TB10pilot: In the dim distant past, I was told that, if you are over retirement age, you could work a certain number of hours a week without a work permit. Now the person who told me this, I'm pretty sure, was Cenk Bolayir who is a lawyer in Girne - telephone number: 0392-8150544. Might be worth going to see him to ask. Very helpful guy. His office is to the left of Girne Belediye as you approach from the Colony Hotel direction.

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
Quick update.
We went for-our (over 60s) Residency yesterday with the stuff suggested by Mrs Boerboel. Fortunately, we took copies of our Kocan and bank statement, as both were requested!! Depends on who you get on the day, I guess.
With regard to timing, we went at 11 o clock and had to wait for one hour because of the number of people waiting ahead of us. Once our number was called however, we were 'sorted' within 10 minutes. Just wish they would install a ticket machine (like you get in the banks), instead of having to go into the office and disturbing someone by asking for a ticket. It would be so much simpler.

PB, There is a ticket machine! Its a little guy who generally hangs around in the coffe shop or outside having a fag - lol. Know what you mean through. Over the years it seems that Friday is the best day to go.

Re: Update on Residency for over 60's
All these posts seem to be from people telling that they have just renewed their residencies ..
Surely there can't just be us two, that when we asked, were told we didn't need to renew ..
Lets hear from others who haven't renewed .. We all know David Brown (BRS Chairman) hasn't ..

We didn't ask, as our choice is to pay the money for peace of mind. That would change, of course, if there was something in writing!

I haven't and was told at the boarder just before mine was going to run out that I didn't need to, and have been over no problems. They just stamp your in and out paper as usual.
