Found a dead cream labrador type dog and had reports of several other poisonings (one fatal) West of Karsiyaka village in the foothills. Shame because this area has been relatively safe for a while. Our dogs were lucky this morning. Please beware!

I am so sorry to hear this. Who on earthkeeps doing this? I know that my neighbour is about to hand in a petition to the government (another one !) about poison. But are these dogs deifnitely poisoned or is it those caterpillars or snakes or? it is bad enough having to cope with the darker side of nature, but if humans are doing this deliberately it is too dark for words. any idea who owned the dog? and thanks for the warning.

The dog looked well fed though we didn't see a collar. We had four dogs with us so didn't venture too close. The dog may not have been poisoned deliberately but snake bites rarely kill and dogs seem to filter out other natural dangers. The fact others have been poisoned within a short period of time would lead one to suspect the goatherds may be at it again, allegedly.

it is such a shame that old understandings of how to deal with 'pests'; are still utilised and family pets are made to suffer and die. Karsiyaka seems a particularly bad area, and many have said they think it is the goatherders, bbut why oh why cnanot Lapta Belediye have a campaign to inform those most likely to be involved (no accusations, just education) in the hopes that this habi will cease. How mahy more dogs have to die before those responsible realise that what they are doing is inhumane. Plus of course, it is more than likely that the poison they use is illegal. if only they could be caught and judged (the law book says that fines and jail can be levied) but no one ever seems to see anything. is it worth the residents of the area havng a chat with theMayor to ask if any education programme could be instigated, even if it only leaflets delivered in the area .

I don't know about the lab type dog that is the subject of this post, but yesterday we lost a dog to poisoning on the mountain track above the Nokta houses west of Karşıyaka, and a neighbour of ours lost their dog too. Both dogs were out with their owners, received prompt vet treatment, but died a horrible and undeserved death. My husband and neighbour are going to the Lapta police tomorrow - whether they are interested remains to be seen. I am going to put up posters in the area and have notified KAR and Pets against Poison. Our dog was a pointer whom we rescued only before Christmas, dumped on the mountain and skin and bones when we found him. He was a handsome happy dog when he was killed.

I am so sorry to hear of this poor unfortunate dog. It reminds me of the one that was poisoned here and which die do n my doorstep. How poison was administered, goodness only know. But if your dog was on a lead, did you see it ingest the poison. Have you got any of it to show thepolice? i am sure thepolice are sympathetic, but they need proof or some kind of evidence to find out who did it. Please post on here what the police say inc ase there is any advice that can be given to others. You must be devastated. my poor dog gets hardly any exercise as I am terrified of her picmking up something from the road. She is denied freedom and the freeedom to sniff. It seems so unnfair and cruel. it will change intime I am sure, but it is very slow going.

Sorry to hear the sad news, it is a practice which is unacceptable today and something should be done to stop it. Unfortunately, the government should be the starting point

My husband went with our neighbour to the Lapta police this morning. They took the details, also spoke on the phone to the vet who was able to confirm it was indeed poison. My husband pinpointed on a map exactly where it happened and the police say they will visit the site. My dog was on an extending lead, I saw him pick up something tiny - I thought it was goat droppings - but he swallowed it almost immediately. By the time we got home a few minutes later he was trembling and foaming at the mouth. We took him straight to the vet, he seemed to recover, but he died at home later from what I think was internal bleeding. If we hear more from the police I'll post again.

I would have been devastated. I am so very sorry. But could I have some realnames here for the newspaper, or would you prefer to remain anonymous? I would quite understand. As I said before, the police are sympathetic, but what can they do with no evidence. This has been going on for far too long.

Hi Marion, I've no problem with our names being used, we're Sheila and Ernie Davis. The vet that treated both dogs was Firdez - who did a great job after a long Sunday's work. I've posted a pic of Ben on the Pets against Poison Facebook page.

Thanks so much. My vet is Firdez and I have now known her for a while and she is a super lady, caring and helpful. Will try to get the pic from Facebook. do let me know if the poilice get in touch with any news. If only to help others. I know many say put muzzles on the dogs, but it does seem a negation of their freedom and rights. People would not like it if they had to go out for a walk wearing one of those, and it seems archaic that is the way that dogs have t o go.
Let's hope and pray that somehow the situation changes soon in line with other countries inthe world. But it is slow going.

So sorry to hear about these dogs. During the last two days we have had two strays poisoned near our home in catalkoy. One dog lived in our cul de sac of 5 houses and was looked after by neighbours. He was a friendly black lab type dog who was no trouble unfortunately by the time he was found it was too late. The other dog was being looked after by a person further up the hill past midsummer house. Apparently meat was thrown into their garden. Fortunately for him he was taken straight to pet cross who saved his life. This happened this pm.
What is going on .... We are still looking for our GS ~ Boo who disappeared from our home on 16th March.

Unfortunately this seems to happen at this time every year when lambs/goats have given birth and the hunting season has finished. Many dogs are abandoned by hunters who no longer have any use for them and herdsmen start to lose young animals, so they poison indiscriminately. One guy in Karsiyaka is notorious for doing this, allegedly, but has a disability so the authorities take no action. This is what I have been told, and I have no personal evidence to back it up, but it does make sense. Even so, it is shocking and alarming to find out that this is still happening. Let's hope they ban the poisons, the main culprit being an insecticide, very soon.

Agree, Frontalman, but lanate is already banned and has been for a long time. someone, somehow brings it in from Turkey where it is not as yet banned. the other problem is that there are places that still sell it. the government did try to chase up these sellers, but shortage of staff made it a problem.
many of us have heard that it is connected with shepherds etc, protecting their flocks and is a practice from way back, so it is really a matter of education in the hopes that the children of today, who are the adults of tomorrow, would not consider such barbaric practices continuing.
