Kibtek gave strike notice yesterday
It appears that today at 11:40am, El-Sen (the union of workers at Kib-Tek) served their notice to strike with the Ministry of Labor. I believe they have to give a 4 day notice from what I remember last time. So Friday at noon they can strike. Its going to be a hot weekend if that happens.
If someone with more Turkish knowledge than me can take a look at the link and add to it.

If so, has ayone got a generator so I can come and uswe my computer. Never mind the air con - give me my laptop and a TV. and they said 8 years ago, that strikes would be over and done with for ever.

Telephone and internet providers are also so I hear going on strike and anyway base stations need electricity and have limited generator capacity.
Caring people worry more about the health - and even lives - of the vulnerable in these circumstances.
How about getting together and sharing transport (and petrol) to get to the nearest beach to give people a chance tocool off in the sea?

Re: Kibtek gave strike notice yesterday
Just to be clear internet providers like multimax and others are NOT going on strike. However all internet connections from the TRNC other than 2 way satellite based systems go out via a fiber optic cables owned by Turk Telecom but controlled at the TRNC end by the TRNC state owned telco. If the TRNC state owned telco does strike they can also cut off this fiber link which will shut down internet access outside of the TRNC as well as phone lines. They did do this for periods during the last electricty / telco strike, at some points shutting off just the internet link and for a while phone lines as well.Rambling Rose wrote:Telephone and internet providers are also so I hear going on strike and anyway base stations need electricity and have limited generator capacity.

Can't waitr for the week-end. Can someone tell me why I am living here? None of the promises made when I came have beenfulfilled, and don't have the money to get out - me and lots of other people . Just hope that electriicy is used to help those who need it - the sick, suffering etc, etc. By the way it's not Friday the 13th is it? just a black week-end looming.
ut I guess it is good that it is not freezing cold, nor super wet. Maybe it is time to sit on the roof and catch up with some of thosebooks. Can;t do hhousework - no electric!

Re: Kibtek gave strike notice yesterday
Well, nobody promised ME a rosegarden when I came to live here - I did my homework and knew it was a deprived country with an unreliable infrastructure. What I didnt realise was that the hardships I saw as a challenge and fun to overcome (particularly since in those days most of us were inthe same boat and pulled together) would become health hazards when I was 16 years older! Nor that so many of the compensating factors would be so badly undermined.
But I am fascinated by Marions electric housework! Most of mine has to be done by human sweat and toil - dusting, sweeping, washing windows, bed making etc. and will still have to be done (but with a lot more sweat) without air cons or even fans. Having to hand wash clothes (assuming there is water) willbe the worst. Do you have one of those marvellous robots we see in science ficion Marion, and if so can I borrow him when the electric is back?

Message 5. Thanks Erol - what I had heard was vague - but that the communications would be strike effected - your explanation makes sense of it. Will mobiles also be affected? What will happen if someone is taken seriously ill, particularly on their own?

Re: Kibtek gave strike notice yesterday
I wish! No, I use a vacuum cleaner on the carpets - and I do confess to a touch of sweat with a broom and bucket - but I can't do washing - refuse to doit by hand, and don't do washing up except in a machine. I had years and years of the manual stuff and have resorted to as many modern gadgets as possible. If I don't have them, then I just blow at the dust when I walk by, and have neough clothes not to worry about washing them. So sorry - nothing new in what I have or do. No sweat left to use!
and poor 'im downstairs, can't do anything now. Oh and of course no cooking, no microwave, no kettle no way to heat water - and that is all domestic stuff - sol i am off tothe ocffee shopto play backgammon until the light fades.

Think of the people that will have no electric to pump their water up. If they don't have access to a pool, there will be a lot of smelly people about. Joking aside, that will be a real health hazard, washing, flushing toilets etc. I can't believe the government would allow it to go on for long. Personally, I would rather have had this strke n the winter if we had to have one. You can always put on an extra jumper and light the fire, and get out the hot water bottles. It's easier to get warm than to cool down. Let's hope they change their minds.

Re: Kibtek gave strike notice yesterday
I imagine that most people will now be trying to put together as much water stocks as their facilities permit, ensure that they have full petrol tanks in their vehicles and generators where applicable and checking their alternative means of light such as stocks of candles etc. What has occurred to me, based on previous experience of these situations, is that if the internet is disrupted many banks will be offering the "Cypriot shrug" of the shoulders when it come to cash withdrawals as in the past they have never had contingency plans for a service to customers when their computer driven systems fail. Without wishing to be alarmist, please remember to ensure that you have sufficient cash in hand to cope with this scenario should it arise.

Do they still pay the idle bar stewards when they are out on strike, and do the "workers" still get their electric for free, it really is time the government sorted these people out.

Maybe a stupid question, but a friend an I both view the Kib tec strike differently. Will they cut the power off, or is it they are not working, so if an electric problem arises, there is no one to fix it.?

Stellastar1 makes a valid point. They should not deliberately cut power off...it's inhumane to do so.

I thought that you should never open your freezer when there is no power source as it will defrost quicker. Damn it, I just bought 2 kilos of pork chops for hubby, I don't eat meat and I can hardly give it to the neighbours!

Stellastar, Last time they went on strike they cut the power off totally. Then it took a couple of days to fix problems when they went back to work.

No, it is all a misunderstanding, there is no strike in any sector or Cyprus Star would have had it somewhere in today’s edition . . . notably on the front page.http://www.kibkom.com/forum/en/posting. ... f=8&t=1786#

Deniz1, yes that was my understanding, that the power would be totally cut off, but my friend insists, they just won't repair anything that breaks down. I remember the summer when it was off from about 7.30 in the morning until the evening, about 5 or 6 years ago, for a couple of weeks, (can't even remember now how long that went on for), and that was terrible, but at least we had powr in the evenings, I'm certainly not lookng forward to a total cut off lasting ???????????????????? Maybe it's just a scare tactic.

Re: Kibtek gave strike notice yesterday
Judging from what happened in January the electric and telecom supplies will be sabotaged. No action was taken against the perpatrators so no discouragment.
I am sure that if electric goes off on monday all the public sector workers will walk out because nobody will work in that heat, especially in Lefkosa.
If the general populace has any balls they will attend any meetings etc of the electric workers and kick the "ooops" out of them for making everybodies lives a nightmare. If any attempt is made to stop the military going in to make sure power is working then the Turkish military should be called in to deal with the perpetrators. They moan about embargoes etc but because of their archaic work practices, over staffing etc it is THEM that is destroying TRNC and unless they realise this soon it will be the 22nd century before TRNC is accepted as a unitary state, or any other unit for that matter.
Of course privatisation is going to do away with jobs but think of the CTA situation. If the government had sorted the staffing, reducing it by at least 50% 5 years ago the airline may still have been operating. But no, we cannot put uncle Hassan or cousin Ali out of work. We have been through all of this in the UK 30 years ago so why have not the politicians learnt? Why, because they are too insular and are not interested in what or how anybody else manages to make things work.
