Volunteering?

i heard yesterday that the government was going to/thinking of, registering volunteers and making life difficult for say, musicians to play for charity. So all the musicians who give their services for free (eg are volunteers!?) and some of the money taken on the night goes to a charitable cause would end up having to pay tax or something riduculous, on the sums given. I cant believe this is so, another example of foot shooting? If there were no volunteers the majority of charities here would fold. I imagine if one "works" for a charity you already have a work permit and pay tax, so wouldnt be counted. I am hoping it is another far fetched TRNC rumour, but the person I heard it from was very worried. Should we be, is this duff gen, or does someone out there have the full story??

Certain charities put the amounts they have collected in the papers, and this causes problems every year. I don't know, but I wouldn't think volounteers have work permits, as they are not beng paid, but when the tax people see some of the large amounts collected for the charities at the markets, etc. they think they' re missing out on something. I would think if they must put something in the papers, why not just put what they bought with the money, not the amount of money. One particular charity put they had raised a huge amount of money and almost immediately after the tax people started looking into things, and it was the same charity putting it in the paper that set it all off last summer. I don't mean to upset anyone as all these volounteers do wonderful work for registered charities.

Yes it is true - from some sources. Other sources such as the Belediyes are saying 'rubbish'. It is also said that NO entertainer living here can do gigs only if they come form overseas or are on holiday.
One of the safa family is trying to see the government, but I would suggest that the BRS goes tothe Government to find out exactly what is what and notifies their members and makes public kowledge what they have found. I mean, it was only at the BRS Ball that Mr Tartar emphasised how precious we are to this place. Maybe he would be a good person to start talking with.
These people who raise money for charity are plugging the gaps that the government cannot afford (they say) to pay out for themselves - cancer treatment, equipment for hospitals, helping schools for the disabled, etc, etc etc.
Shooting in the foo't is a good expresson , but I am sure there are others out there who could think of 'better' ones - possibly using words not contained in the dictionary.

sorry about yesterday. Couldn't get there so the lovely Sue went instead. By the way if you had a comment you wanted put in the write up - give me it NOW!
good luck with the quest for info. apparently someone is going into the office to try to give info, but I feel that could be re workers for money as opposed to entertainers. This is a tough cookie to get info, but you MUST speak to the government and the belediye as they are alreadysinging form different hymn sheets.
