On Monday the GKK (the North's military) made an announcement concerning the use of jet-skis and motor boats. The GKK stated that :
• regardless of whether the water has been roped off with buoys or not, jet-skis should not be operated within 100 metres of the shore, except under the condition stated below.
• in the corridors, roped off with buoys, for access to the open water, the speed should not exceed 3 knots.
• jet skis should not be used more than 700 metres from the shore

The GKK also recommended that :
• those under 18 should not use jet-skis.
• jet skis should not be operated when wind speeds exceed 16 knots.
• they should not be used before sunrise or after sunset.

The GKK stated that we should call the coast-guard on 158 if we felt anyone was acting irresponsibly with either a jet-ski or a motor boat.

What is very sad is that there are already laws about using jet ski's as I remember reading them in The Star many months ago when I did an interview for ADA TV, this was when a young lady (a friend of the Toros family) was killed hitting rocks on a jet ski.

It's good to have rules but who ensures they are adhered to?

Even if there are no formal rules jet ski hirers should give some sort of safety briefing when hiring them out. The riders should not go on them without a life jacket and they should be made aware of other water users such as swimmers and spearfishermen. I hate jetskis not as such but they represent largely the yobs of the sea who create a huge potential for a severe accident in an unforgiving environment. I am sure though there are some sensible owners though sometimes they are few and far between.

DAN Europe do a safety campaign which is based around propeller injuries if there are any press people out there if you can get in touch I will pass on details perhaps some sort of campaign could be run.

There are indeed Scooby, but following recent accidents, I think the GKK wanted to remind people of them, and moreover remind us of the free telephone number for when we see individuals acting irresponsibly with jet skis or motor boats.

Jonnie wrote "they (the operators of jet skis) should be made aware of other water-users such as swimmers" - I agree Jonnie. I am currently in training for the Episkopi bay-to-bay swim, so I like to swim out to some of the small islands/rocks off the coast. Every 30 or 40 seconds though I stop and look around ... to make certain there are no motor boats or jet skis coming my way
