They will burrow in the garden as well as utilize trees. They also regularly chew through any plastic water carrying hose which is above ground. Appropriate poison is available in shops but needs to be placed in areas where only rats can get at it eg up a small pipe. You could of course give a home to 50 or so cats and dogs from KAR or hire a digger to flatten all your trees/land and cover it in rebar and concrete !

Dont realy want to put down poison as it might also kill the lizards , & they dont harm any one.
Have only seen one so far, but i know if there is one there are a few.
Last night was good we have a resident Screech owl, & he was very interested in fact i think he got one

Royal,
Sometimes there is a"natural" remedy to a problem, usually the best way I think!

I hear them most evenings as they sit up in the almond trees, gnawing away at the nuts. They even continue when I shine a torch on them and in the morning there are piles of nut shells, with neat, cut-outs, where the kernels have been extracted. They appear to be just ordinary rats who take to the trees when the fruit or nuts are ready!

We have them in our trees, and quite often I have half or part of one in the house as well, after one of my cats has decided to have a snack indoors. For some reason my cats don't like the tails.

We have rat boxes that you put the poison into and it doesn't seem to affect the lizards. Our Pointer spends hours stalking them and is very adept at killing them

A rat is a rat, is a rat. The ones in the trees are just bigget. Get rid of them. Ask the belediye for advice if you are not sure which poison to use. If you do nothing sooner or later they will come pretty close, and there will be many. They also do a lot of damage to your fruit trees, especially almond trees. In some parts of Girne they are 'a big problem'

Tree rats are rats. Do a google search and see Wilkipedia. They are a big problem in America and there is a lot about them. Among other things they chew wiring and start fires and, like all rats etc. carry leptospirosis (Weils Disease) which is nasty and affects animals and humans and animals can be carriers so do not encourage your pets to catch them. Also remember if a pet can be poisoned by eating a poisoned rat.
Two simple deterrants - keep fruit trees isolated from fences etc which they use as access and remove all rotten fruit (particularly lemons, I have found,) from the garden.
And right, encourage owls , whicha re their natural predators.

Sorry - can't find an "edit" facility here. I meant to say: "Tree rats ARE rats" and "remember THAT a pet can be poisoned": sorry, I blame the heat!
