Reported on All Jazeera news that Turkey will soon be fighting Isis. They will also be allowing other nations warplanes to use their airbases. Good news as the sooner these lunatics are destroyed the better. Hopefully the people of that region can then live in peace

As both Britain and Turkey will then be on the same side - how do you make this assumption? Plus in general terms War = good business for heavy industry. Turkey has plenty of that.....

On TV this morning it said that the Government in Ankara had given permission for their airspace and other facility could be used by specific NATO countries, it didn't say anything about joining in the fight as yet. As far as Turkey is concerned the subject of the Kurdish involvement is clouding the issue. In many ways Turkey is between a rock and a hard place.

War would be good for those countries like USA, UK, France, Germany etc where "the heavy industry" exists. In the past, wars were started to support such industries in terms of economic crises. Turkey's main source of income is from agricultural products and light industry, often selling to neighbouring countries such as Iran and Iraq. Trade with both would definitely be disrupted!

Furthermore, USA made their desires very clear during the latest Security Council meetings in New York - they want Turkey to use its land forces against ISID. It is OK for the Americans to take off from the aircraft carriers in the Gulf and the British fly in from bases in cyprus for relatively safe "night bombing" raids BUT I wonder how many Brits would support their army getting involved on any land action? ISID is worse than Afghans in terms of fanaticsm and cruelness - if they do not get killed, you would not like your soldiers to be POW in their hands

The equation is; Public in Turkey would be out on the streets protesting their sons getting killed in a war that had nothing to do with them. the police would use heavy handed tactics to get them off the streets, public unrest and opposition led demonstrations would grow all over the place - some civilians would inevitably get killed during a large scale social unrest etc. THAT my friend, is in par with political unstability in a country such as Turkey = weakening of the Turkish Lira...

As a currency trader, if a region is in conflict you hit the nearest civilised nation's currency. It doesn't matter whose side they are on. Wars are expensive, especially if you happen to win.

Eyebob, that is the reality of where we are now.
Heavy industry, take ship building not in a British yard.
If you want a cruise ship look elsewhere, Germany , Italy etc.
Considering that we used to build almost every ship afloat!!
Armed forces, look at ww1, the keiser looked at our " tiny army and described them as contempitals " this was an army of near one million men.
We will soon be down to eighty thousand.

OK the days of large armys are the the thing of the past, but we still need to defend our nation from threats external and internal.
