Our passports need to be renewed before we go to the UK next year. Can we do it ourselves on-line or is it better to do it via the owner of the cafe near the HSBC Girne?

Are you British??
Couple of years ago, I had my British passport renewed. Had to go to the Consulate in Lefkosa "in person", with all the necessary documents, photos & fees "cheque to cover cost of issuing new passport".
Passport then was taken to the south, and from there it was sent to the UK to be renewed for me. It took about good few weeks "more than normal" to get it back.
Later I got the notification "passport was ready for collection" and had to collect it "in person".
I would suggest you visit the British Consulate website, obtain the information on requirement. Passports are important documents, without it you would be stuck, make sure you get all the facts regarding renewals of passports "from the source"....
Best of luck.

The British consulate stopped processing passports over 3 years ago. every UK citizen must send thier passport to the UK for renewal, and the best place to do this is Cafe Boss. They have been doing this for as long as the BHC has stopped passport control, they have all the corect information and will help in any way possible. They use DHL for this transaction.
