Rubbish!

In today's thread about freezers, Sophie wondered what one does with a defunct freezer. Our garage is littered with large items of rubbish, eg broken sunbed, old shower cubicle etc., because we don't know what to do with them. We asked at our local belediye office in Karsiyaka, and just got the normal shrug! No wonder things get dumped in the countryside.

Does anybody know what can be done with large items of rubbish?

You can pay the Belediye to take all these items away, there is a recycling facility at the dump were the scrap is sent back to Turkey along with the plastic items, drink cans, plus all other metals.
The recycling is done by a company who pay the dump for this privlage.

Thanks for that. I will tell the girl at the Belediye office! Can you take things to the dump yourself? If so, is there one in the Girne area, or does one have to go to Lefkosa?

Hippocampus.
There is no dump in the Girne ares. The only dump is at Dikmen and I think you will be charged to dump anything.
The tip is run by the Goverment, the recycling is a subcontract to this, so you would have to pay the goverment to tip.

Hippocampus, thanks for resurrecting the thread about disposal of rubbish. You might like to know that items as small as you describe i.e. shower cubicle, sunbeds etc can be disposed of with the baths, half a dismantled kitchen and dumped further up our road in the ravine - why not, everyone else does!! My biggest problem at the moment is the large paint containers that builders use. I managed to get rid of a few (after they had been properly cleaned) because KAR use them at the their Centre.

Sophie, why don't you ask the garden centres if they can make use of them, they're ideal for planting trees in.

Had asked belediye in Gecitkale, and they told me to just leave outside the house. Cleared my garage with loads of rubbish including an old dishwasher. By the time dustbin men came, half was taken by locals, but they did take everything away. Pretty good service and do not have to inform in future, just leave outside and it will be taken.

Guess it may be different in built up towns.

In catalkoy they are really good and the municipality seem to scan the village for rubbish, its just a shame in our road / street we live opposite an area not built on which all and sundry think is the best place to dump their rubbish. I just wish they (the ones who dump) had the common sense to separate their '*rap' into garden cuttings, furniture for the yellow lorry and put food/house waste near the road so the dustcart driver just does not drive passed and collects it either on a Sunday/Wednesday night or Monday/Thursday morning. It isn't rocket science!!!!!
