Shoulder Joint Replacement

My wife has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis damage to her shoulder. The specialist here (after X-Ray and CT scans) has said she will need a shoulder joint replacement. Has anyone experience of this condition and treatment either here or in the UK? An idea of costs would be helpful as well.

Thanks

Hi Hilltop,

If I were you I would get a second opinion on this, in the UK if you go back on a regular basis. You need to remember
that all the private hospitals here are businesses and are out to make money. My husband went to see an orthopaedic specialist at a private hospital as he was complaining of pain in his hip. The consultant said he needed a hip replacement
and he could do it the next day. My husband said let me think about it and came home, he discussed it with me who has
had two hip replacements in the UK. I said if you were in the UK and went to a NHS hospital they would tell you, you were not
bad enough to do the surgery and tell you to take some pain killers. He took some anti inflammatery drugs and hasn't had any problems since, this was two years ago and he is still very active. I expect you will have the xrays of your wifes shoulder, take them with you when you go for your second opinion. I hope everything turn out OK for her.

Slightly off topic, hilltop, for which I apologise, but why is there a little bug running around on the left hand side of your post, under your details......I thought it was on my screen. Is it just me????

Butler's Wife's opinion strongly seconded. We have been told that we need a multitude of procedures, from gall bladder removal to cataract treatment, none of which were strictly necessary, and are just the result of aging. There are so many simple keyhole procedures which can relieve a painful joint, get an opinion from a state doctor either here or in the UK.

Not relevant to your particular problem but I went to the Kolan British Hospital last Thursday 22nd and after an ultrasound locally was diagnosed with a hernia, the doctor said I need to see the surgeon in Lefkosa/Kolan and he would ring me with the appointment(still waiting for the call) and the approx cost was in the region of 6000/7000TL.
I have since been to Girne state Hospital and seen a surgeon, had the relevant tests and have an operation booked for the 10th Dec, approx cost 1000TL so I'll take my chances there.

Thank You to the Butlers Wife and others for the advice. Going back to the UK for a few weeks next month so a second opinion would seem sensible.
