Technical PC help required!

Problem: My new laptop cannot "see" my old external hard drive.

I know the USB slot(s) works because I can use a memory stick.

I have tried Google and also some of the help and FAQ sections. But the answers are beyond my capabilities.

Can anyone please help?

I am willing to pay in cash/beers/ciggies or I am open to any legal (but not immoral suggestions!).

Also, I have loaded MS Office 2007. It all works fine, apart from Outlook, which I use for my Hotmail account. I can send emails, but not receive.

Thanks

Note: PC: Toshiba Satellite C50-B-13N, Windows 8.1, 64-bit.

"New laptop is Windows 8.1" - perhaps - though rather strange - there is no driver for your external hard drive...
How "old" is your external hard drive? If you still have your old laptop, can you connect your external drive, click on "control Panel", click on "Device Manager", and see if it shows the make and model number of your external drive.
If you can find that info, then search online for any information about drivers for Windows 8.1 for that make/model of drive, or any problems that others may have had.
As I say, very strange, but the above might provide some line of attack.

Thanks for your advice.

I was going through your suggestions, then suddenly, I tried to try run program's for previous versions of windows. Whilst it was running this, my external HD was discovered.

Thank you.

Any ideas on the Outlook bit!

Hi,
glad it cleared up!
Unfortunately, although I've been using PC's and microsoft since windows 3 (20 years!), I've never used Outlook....
I used to use Outlook EXPRESS until a few years ago, but that was totally separate...
