90 day stay limit

My wife and I are thinking of moving to the TRNC next year, about 6 months before our 60th birthdays.
Obviously it makes sense to wait to apply for residency until after our birthdays, but how does the 90 day stay limit work? If we went to the South and stayed for a couple of days would that count for re-setting the 90 days on our return? Or do you have to leave the island and go to Turkey or somewhere?

I think you have to do the whole rigmarole (police, hospital, blood test etc) the first time anyway, whether over 60 or not, you might as well just start the procedure as soon as you move out here. It's certainly a lot easier than it used to be - I did it yesterday, got to the police station at 8.30 and was home by 11.30, so not so bad.
