Yet people still wonder why the peace talks will never succeed! It is a sad and silly move by the RoC, who seem not to care one jot about joining the Island back together but just getting as much for themselves as they possibly can. I still feel safe knowing that Turkey has made a promise to never let the 1974 situation happen again and to stand by Northern Cyprus in all events.
All it needs now is for the RoC to close the crossing points and that will be game over for them, they will have effectively said that they do not wish to have anything from the TRNC and that should suit us all fine.

It's ironic isn't it? On Sunday we were remembering the people killed here in Cyprus, both service and civilian personnel, in Berlin they were celebrating the 25th anniversary of the bringing down of the Berlin Wall, but North, South and any other interested parties are still arguing about the island of Cyprus. When looked at on Google Earth it's such a miniscule, seemingly unimportant piece of land and yet it continues to irk politicians and lawyers alike, not to mention the people who live here. It reminds me of Jarndyce -v- Jarndyce, eventually there will be absolutely nothing left of it to argue about.

Yes, Sophie, Jarndyce and Jarndyce came to my mind as well. They are supposed to be short of money, but it's amazing how much can be found for legal expenses!!!

This is often mooted but can never happen in this way as it was the UN who opened them -only they can close them effectively.

Re: Worrying times ahead.
The RoC allowed passage in 2004 to all but Turkish citizens, this in response to the TRNC, which also relaxed passage across the UN Buffer Zone. Prior to 2004 the UN had never restricted free passage across the buffer zone in any case. The main reason for the easement in transit across the buffer zone was due to the RoC being admitted (wrongly) into the EU and for no other reason - if the RoC had not allowed free passage of EU citizens into the RoC it would never have been accepted into the EU. It therefore can not now stop EU citizens from entering via an "Official Entry Point". The buffer zone is not an "Official Entry Point" as it allows free passage from a country that is not in existence!! It is a very good point to argue with and whilst the arguments continue the RoC can make it very difficult for "Anyone" to enter the RoC via the buffer zone. For sure the RoC can stop vehicle access into the RoC unless the vehicle enters via an official port.
In any case, given the amount of funds that the RoC (or as they like to say "Cyprus") owes the EU, I do not think the EU would allow them to leave the EU just because they restrict (or make it too difficult) access to EU citizens.
However, the TRNC can stop people from crossing into the RoC should it so wish as it is (effectively) not in the EU - unless it is on a Monday afternoon when it is snowing on the beach and not a holiday plus the price of fish has dropped - or is in the EU if the RoC want to make another political outcry! The UN are here (there) to control/patrol the buffer zone and keep the people apart - if they feel the need at any time then they can keep the people apart by simply closing the access across the buffer zone, quite within the legal standing of the UN Charter.
Its a good game.

Cant help but think that both sides have missed the chance to cash in on the hydro carbons. But North and South could cause an argument in an empty room. Lets move on for gods sake.

Dodger, this is an organ of the Greek propaganda machine - no wonder it reports matters in this light...
