What is the local equivalent to the Car MoT test?
Where is this done?
When is the first one on a car purchased new in the TRNC?
How often does this need to be renewed?

We all get a little confused at first with what we refer as the MOT, our 'foreign heads' expect the equivalent test that they get in England - Its not - it is an official check the car is what it states on the paper work hence why the engine number is very important.
It takes place at Girne or Lefkosa police stations
The paper work is issued with a new car
a car is every 3 years, commercial every year. The government produce a list which is in the tax office
http://www.kktcmaliye.com/i/mozka/mal/M ... 013_14.pdf and generally the MOT takes place in a 2 week period.

Just be aware that 'every 3 years' is a loose term - it could be 2.5 - 3.5 years, ours was due 2.5 years after purchase and nearly caught us out. As long as you check the link that snd1966 posted (section D for private cars) you should be okay.

As the others have said, check the dates for your registration to determine the appropriate fortnight for your car. If you miss your window then you pay double.
You must go to one of the independent garages and get an official emissions test, this must be done 5 days or less before applying for your MOT. Take your log book, current tax & insurance, previous MOT (if not 1st time), emissions test certificate and the fee to the tax office. They will give you a receipt which you then take with the car to the police station where the MOT will be done. Note that it is essential that the car is clean including the engine bay which is often checked.

The emissions test was about 25tl, MOT was about 125tl, sorry can't remember the exact price.
Please remember to go to the tax office to pay, before you go to the MOT station.

As people have said a list is produced yearly with car registrations and its down to the car owner to check if their registration number is on it and pay in the fortnight one can get their vehicle mot without a fine
It generally moves a couple of weeks every 3 years for private cars.

Don’t forget your mud flaps! A sure failure if the “tester” had had a bad night last night!

I’m sure it’s been mentioned but you have to get a bit of paper from the tax office prior to taking for mot check .
We normally get ours serviced and then ask them to get the mot
I’m sure you will enjoy the experience

With the online payment system you print off your receipt and take it with you.

We've had four cars in our time here (not including latest one) and each time the guy has said "you need mudflaps, go and get them" We haven't ever done so, so the next check comes along "you need mudflaps" and so on it went. The latest car already had them. In two years time the next query will be to make sure the engine/registration numbers are clearly visible.

Oh yes 13Roman58. I'd forgotten that one. Was it before or after the Safety First Box. I got through but with a warning that I shouldn't have Elastoplast because some people were allergic to them!!
