Is there an official body who can tell me if this going to happen. I want to give my daughter time to change her flight from 22nd Dec which seems to be the time of the strike.

Only what was reported in Cyprus Today the government stopped their strike earlier this year but are not allowed to do it again. They have three weeks to sort it out or the strike will go ahead around Christmas time but so far no response from the government. Typical.

I don't see how any 'Official Body' can tell you what is going to happen in the future, when the parties concerned are not even talking - unless they've got Crystal Balls

If you're concerned that your daughter might be flying at the time of a possible strike, get her to change her flight now - better safe than sorry. If you leave it until things are more definite, everyone else will be trying to change their flights as well, and you'll kick yourself if you've left it too late.

Why wait?

And the moral of the story is: -

Fly B.A. into Larnaca!

If 'our lot' carry on as they are, then there won't be any flight infrastructure left to worry about.

I am not totally in favour of strikes, but to be fair on this occasion ,the government has dragged it's heels for so long. They have refused to meet at arbitration for months, not even answering the request. Three times they have used their authority and vetoed the strike.(the maximum amount of times they are allowed to do that) Finally I am sure the air traffic controllers have said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! They have said they are under staffed and therefor working longer hours and this compromises safety for the passengers! Surely the government has got to get their act together and come to some sort of a deal?IMO

Does anyone know the date that the current strike ban ends? Cyprus Today said in just over 3 weeks but as my kids arrive from the UK around that time it would be good to know if one or both of them may be caught up in it.

I have an air-traffic controller (ATC) friend working from the European Control in Maastricht and he tells me the international/European, including Turkey, rules for hours worked/rest/degree of supervision/staffing levels are very, very strict and cannot be varied. I do not know the conditions the ATC personnel working at Ercan experience, but if they do contravene these strict international norms, then they have a real case for concern - as do we, the travelling public using this airport. As the TRNC sponsor, it might be a case for Turkey to intervene to ensure the levels of safety here meet acceptable international norms. From an ATC one-sided viewpoint, it would appear the TRNC Government stand point could comprise flight movement safety in/out of the TRNC and totally screw tourism as airlines refuse to fly here, (if the claims of the ATC are true)! At the very best, an outside, informed and independent investigation would inform us all of the facts and would prove useful. I wonder?

Deniz! How stupid of me! I was at a meeting today with the Head of the Air Traffic Control in Ercan - and I intended to ask about the strike but completely forgot about it!

However I've got his number now and I will ring him up tomorrow to find out for you

I just talked to the head of the Air Traffic Control Service, apparently they had a long meeting with the relevant government ministry yesterday with a positive result and the government accepted to draw up a new protocol to give the air traffic controllers what they want. His words were "we had reached an agreement at a scale of 99% and the chances of a strike at this time is highly unlikely! Your relatives can go ahead and book their flights with no fear..." (I told him a close relative was planning to travel around 24-25 December)

Following on from this thread I found this link which may help some people who might be planning to travel or your friends or family over the Xmas period. It gets updated about every 2-3 days and it seems at the moment, that Belgium, Portugal may be the ones to watch for. Other countries seem to have problems maybe with strikes on their buses etc.

It won't help those who need information for Ercan but maybe a link to save.
