Hi, we have a fairly young lemon tree which has only had a few lemons on in the last couple of years but this year we have on one side 1 almost ripe lemon and 2 babies but on the other side we have about a dozen tangerines they are fairly sharp in taste obviously the lemon effect but look, peel and smell of tangerine. Has anyone else had this here or are we just lucky to maybe be having the best of both worlds

There are several trees here that carry two fruits - usually citrus - there used to be one at Bellapaise with three. Its done by grafting but I think the tree used at stock is usually already well established, maybe unusual in a very young tree. I have a very large , very old, lemon tree which occasionally produces grapefruit, so presumably it was grafted some time in the past, but the grapefruit are very bitter and even soaking in sugar and/or honey wont make them edible!

Many thanks RR for your reply, looks like we will continue to enjoy the best of both worlds at least this year anyway, maybe it will revert back to just lemons again next year

We were told by our Turkish friend that the oranges which can appear on a lemon tree are wild and the branches or suckers which produce them need to be cut off or will take over the tree.These branches usually have thorns on them. The fruit is usually full of pips and very sour.
