Doesn't the 3G ones use wi-fi as well? I have just had to buy a new one as I spilled Orange juice on mine on the plane going out so had no books while I was over there.

That's is why you buy a 3g kindle so you don't have to rely on wi-fi, at a bit of a loss what to do now unless someone, somewhere knows better

reading my leaflet it says all kindle devices have wi-fi connectivity built in and some models have3g connectivity.
(reading from leaflet)
if you want to set up a wi-fi connection for your wi-fi and 3g capable device, follow the steps below
1 press the home button and then press the menu button
2 Navigate to "Settings" by moving the 5 way controller down, then pressing the 5 way controller to select.
3 Select "wi-fi Settings" to show available wi-fi networks.
4 Select a public or private wi-fi network.
Hope you are succesful

From Kindle terms and conditions
"Availability. If your Kindle is located in an area in which it cannot maintain wireless connectivity, you may not be able to use some or all of the Service. We are not responsible for the unavailability of wireless connectivity for your Kindle or any corresponding loss of Service. Events beyond our reasonable control (such as changes in service or terms by wireless carriers) may impact the terms or circumstances under which we provide you wireless connectivity and may result in a change to these terms or a temporary or permanent modification or loss of wireless connectivity for your Kindle."
Having said that they do still show coverage in the North of Cyprus on their coverage map here

You can also buy and transfer books from an internet connected laptop or computer to your kindle via the USB cable as an alternative to using wifi or 3G. Really only of use to those who may have an internet connection at home but do not have wifi as well.

It is easy I have used my kindle all over the world in effect 3G works like a mobile phone it has nothing to do with wi fi I have a turkcell phone with a perfect signal so has my kindle??? I have used this kindle on 3G for the last 3 years in TRNC so the problem must be with Turkcell I just wanted to know if anyone was having the same problem

Amazon have to pay the mobile phone companies in each region for the access to make 'whispernet' work. They seek to cover these costs based on sales of books. It may well be that the contract they had that allowed 3G (whispernet) to work in the TRNC has expired and they can not get a new contract with either Turkcell or Telsim at a price that justifies the sales they get from coverage in these areas. I do not know if this is the case or not but it certainly is in the realm of possibility. Which is exactly why they state in their terms and conditions that they can not be responsible for loss of service and specifically cite changing terms and conditions from the mobile operators they use in different regions as one cause of services that used to work in the past no longer working in the future.

To try and say what I tried before in a different way. With your Turkcell phone , you pay for the connection. With the Kindle, which uses the same infrastructure / connection it is Amazon who pay for it and that may well be the reason it is no longer working. Amazon may no longer be paying for it.
If you have a suitable phone, you could pay for your own 3G data connection with Turkcell or Telsim and then use that phone as your own portable wifi hotspot that you can then connect the kindle to, giving you the same functionality as if the kindle was itself directly connected to 'whispernet'. If the cause of your problems is that Amazon no longer has an agreement with Turkcell or Telsim that allows whispernet to work then this would be a solution, all be it one where you have to pay for the connection rather than Amazon.

Have you tried getting in touch with Amazon Kindle via email.
I have found them extremely helpful and efficient when I have had a problem.
Worth a try?

Was thinking of getting a Kindle. Reading this thread am having doubts, do not possess the level of computer literacy that seems to be required.
Looks like Best seller will still be my supplier. Must say always enjoy a browse there and they do order any book thats not in stock.

We are still waiting for our gear to arrive from Australia, stuck in Istanbul with all my books in the cartons, and my Kindle has been a lifesaver. Personally I don't have my Kindle on wifi as it chews through the battery. I keep it off-line, buy e-books on Amazon but download them to my computer and transfer them to my Kindle. It's very easy, if you want to find out how, put in a message and I'll show you how. But I think the Kindle is a brilliant invention, it was great on the long-haul flight from Perth to Dubai to Larnaca to carry a lightweight contraption instead of heavy books.

If I take the plunge, then
bloody one click ordering!!!!! will be my downfall. Am terrible impulse buyer when it comes to books, have lots still waiting to be read. Keep promising no more until I catch up, but it never happens.
Am I alone in this or does anyone else have other impulse buying syndromes ?
