Could anyone tell me please the current price for 1 LT. of Olive Oil, from the Turkish Lady at Lambousa.

Moving off-track a little.....
Have always thought Olive Oil in Cyprus was a bit on the expensive side, so I would also be interested in the Lambousa price.
As a guide, Sainsbury's are currently selling a litre of Spanish extra virgin Olive Oil @ £3.40p or about 12.5 TL.
Maybe times (and prices) have changed !!

Again on the subject of olive oil I have been told virgin olive oil is the best thing to use for a newborn baby as a moisturiser, has anyone tried this and if so can they recommend to me the best one to use and where to buy it?

I think the Extra Virgin Karpaz Olive Oil is the Best and no comparison to something from the supermarket, unadulterated, just the smell is wonderful!!. This I buy from my neighbour, who is very careful and makes sure all her olives are clean without stalks and blemishes.
Unfortunately she has very little to sell this year, but another year........
She also told me that in the Pazaar(weekly Market) in Yenierenköy they were selling bottles for TL25 per litre

When our granddaughter was born the midwife recommended using pure olive oil on dry patches of skin. We used some of the first press from our own olives which worked fine.

I cant believe Olive oil is selling at 25TL per litre, double the price of the U.K.
If this IS the case, then maybe somebody could try and explain why, considering the supermarkets have to import the oil from Spain.

Olives are usually harvested every two years and 2014 was due to be the year. However, there's been an absolutely horrendous harvest this time - not just here but throughout the Med.

The causes for this are threefold: too mild a preceding winter led to a bumper crop of the flies that eat the olive fruit; not enough rain during the same winter; and a massive scale back of pesticide spraying by the municipalities - again helping those nasty little flies. Oddly, many other countries also decided to scale back spraying last year and they suffered the same growing conditions.

The major oil producing countries have large stocks of oil so the poor harvest hasn't yet reflected on prices. As stocks dwindle the costs will rise however, and there have been warnings thereto. The TRNC produces tiny amounts by comparison and that generally by small-holders cultivating between 5 and 50 trees for themselves and their families with a surplus distributed to relatives etc with very little held in reserve. With small production and stocks the poor harvest has an immediate effect and prices have shot up by about 100%. In our case we normally produce about 200 litres from 20 trees every two years. This last year we managed only 35 litres and therefore will be selling none. With hundreds of small-holders doing the same the local market quickly dries up.

The lady at Lambousa's oil is TL20 a bottle.

I agree with you cjtill, I have never understood this either, but Lambousa's explanation makes sense. I used to get Olive oil from Lidl or Aldi in the UK and it was so cheap, good stuff Italian.

Then when we moved here I was surprised at how expensive it was, We normally harvest our own, but yes the last 2 years have been a barren.

But then again many of our UK type products are cheaper here than the UK if you shop around so you can't win em all.

On the subject of uses, it can be used on your hair.

Just seen 6 or 8 beautiful olive trees being cut down near Tempo in Catalkoy so a few more pints of oil gone.

Another thing to add to the list of items to be brought back from the U.K, though it does feel like "Coals to Newcastle".
