Thought you might like to see the 2,400 word letter that Embargoed! has sent to David Burrowes who reckons he is coming over for a second time to 'clean up' the churches in the north. if you have time to read this letter you will see some interesting point,s plus a few comments on the subject from the former Cyprus 44 forum (one of them at least i smine!) What do others feel about this emotive subject?
Sorry i am being told 'The extension txt is not allowed' so obviously I can't upload the file from my computer. But if anyone wants to see if (unless someone tells me how to upload it) ask me for a copy at
marionstuart.cyprusstar@hotmail.com. sorry about that.

Thank you. I think I was trying to upload the wrong text, but I hope people read it, for it is very interesting reading, but that is just my opinion. And I am sure Embargoed! would likde the views of others.

I feel that as long as the Greek Orthodox Church plays a major role in South Cyprus, little will change. They excercise a heavy influence over the lives of the citizens, maybe more so than the politicians.
There appear to be some who harbour the dream of Istanbul becoming Constantinople again. They have never got over the conquests of the Ottoman Empire, especially Constantinople the seat of their Patriach. I may be wrong but I think that seat still exists today.
The Greek Orthodox Church is immensely wealthy not to mention the amount of property they own.
Sadly British Governments of whatever persuation have been taken in by Greek propaganda. May not be of any relevence but note the British Monarch's Consort is a Greek. The heir to the British Throne is half Greek so maybe it is not surprising we English end up appearing to take sides when we should be neutral.

some very good points, Mel, but I notice that since I lived and worked in the south some 20 years ago (and as a theolgian - my B.D. does not mean Blooming Daft) the church is losing much of the stranglehold on the population. (one could say the same thing about U.K - think back to earlier last century and compare with today) and so in time I think it will change.
one must remember however, that B ritain still claims to be a Guarantor Power for the whole of Cyprus! And if they are not prepared to continue in that role they should state why they are not being equal and fair to the whole of the island and not lean to one half.(or thereabouts)

Agree entirely. The Greek Cypriot propaganda is very well organised and probably not short of a bob or two. As Bob Dylan wrote " Money doesn't talk, it swears. "

I agree Mel, the GC propaganda machine is indeedmighty and wealthy, but one would have thought that some intelligent MP's in U.K might have been able to think for themselves. and when you consider we have the lovely Merel Ece in Westminster, it make sone cry. She tries to run debates, but no one is interested, and yet they have rallies in Trafalgar Square with that awful 'bloody map' and it is supported by many! Or maybe the thing that angers me most is my inability to really DO anything. How about you?
